MAC Senior Men Prep for Tennis Playoffs

T

wo senior men’s tennis teams repre- sent MAC next month at USTA sectional playoffs in Sunriver. It is hoped their winning ways propel them from sectional competition on to national competition in October. Garrett Erickson captained the 3.0

men’s team that qualified at local play- offs in January. Competition was tough throughout the season and especially at playoffs; securing the seat at sectionals came down to one tense, third-set tie-break in the finals. Erickson’s team had become experi- enced at playing under pressure throughout the season, and the MAC team pulled out a victory over the second-place team from Mountain Park Racquet Club.

“The team was outstanding this season, and it has been a great privilege to be the guy to fill out the winning score cards,” says Erickson. “I can hardly believe that I am a rookie captain going to Sunriver,

but the fact is, with this team, I really had very little doubt,” he says. Team members are Erickson, Fred Buller, Phil Flemming, Dave Hooff, Tony Humpage, Joe Jablonski, Bruce Landrey, Dave Nellis and Steve Mileham.

Third-set tie-breaks were also impor- tant in the 4.5 men’s season. According to Captain Bill Jackson, “The MAC team won the league this year with a 7-1 record with six of the matches being very close 2-1 victories and some amazing third-set tie- breaks.”

Jackson credits the team’s success to great team camaraderie, working together for years, and shared love of the game. “We have always had a very competi- tive team that is comprised of all MAC members, unlike some opponents who recruit players from all over Washington and Oregon. It shows the depth of talent at MAC.”

MAC has sent a 4.5 men’s team to sectionals for the past six years, and has enjoyed the special friendship of competing together at the Sunriver tour- nament This year the roster includes co-captains Jackson and Jack Henry, John Cleary, Jumbo Fernando, John Helmer III, Don Holman, Kevin Lucey, Peter McKittrick, Rod McMillan, Peter Mercereau, Tom Spitzer and John Williams.

Congratulations go to both teams.

Online court reservation system

Those who haven’t used the online

court reservation system should be sure to give it a try. There is an easy online tutorial that shows how to use it. Log on to the MAC website, go to “Reservations” and click on “Tennis” in the drop down menu. Click on the “Need Help?” prompt for access to the instructional materials. The online system has been in use since September 2009 and has grown in use each month. Currently a majority of courts are booked using this procedure. Those who have any difficulty should report the problem to the Tennis Office

Historically speaking, the idea of combining efforts to cover

more ground isn’t entirely unprecedented. So when Alyssa O’Rourke and Keri Nicolaisen joined forces over 21 years ago, they became pioneers in their own right. Because through their partnership, they’ve been able to offer their clients the unique
