Lasting Pain Relief

The Whole-Body Solution

of Myofascial Release

T

wo serious horse riding accidents at age 15 and 16 and three automobile accidents at 24, 26 and 39 left Olym- pia Hostler so incapacitated that she could barely walk. One agonizing crawl a day, from bedroom to bathroom, drained what little energy she had. “I couldn’t work for three years because I was so debilitated, and even as I lay in bed, it was impossible to watch television, because I continually lost my train of thought,” says Hostler.

After conducting numerous tests to determine the extent of Hostler’s health challenges, her doctor delivered what he considered good news: The problem was severe damage to the body’s soft

connective tissue, or fascia. The bad news: Hostler would have to live with her pain and manage it throughout her re- maining lifetime with prescription pain relievers. “Right then and there, I decided that the doctor’s prognosis wasn’t go- ing to work for me,” says Hostler, whose detectable tone of determination con- jures up the image of a spirited woman willing to exhaust all resources in order to regain her health. And she did.

“Nothing was too far out or out of the question,” Hostler emphasizes. “I was willing to try any-

thing that showed a remote possibility for restoring my health.” Her laundry list of experiences with numerous therapies whizzes by until it stops at myofascial release, an effective whole-body ap- proach to the treatment of pain and dysfunction devel- oped by physical therapist John F. Barnes. When Hostler got relief in the first session, she knew she had found her solution. “I had several more ses-

sions and found lasting pain relief that affected me like nothing else I’d ever experienced,” advises Hostler. Unlike massage therapies focused on improving circulation, inducing relaxation or drain- ing lymph fluid, the myofascial treat-

ment reached Hostler’s deepest layer of fascia to free the restrictions causing her pain. “It almost seemed impossible that a hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the myofascial connective tissue restric- tions, could begin to relieve three years of intense pain,” says Hostler. It took only one myofascial session for Hostler to know that, even minus her pain, she was not going to return to business as usual. “I got to the top of the corporate ladder at age 29 and discovered the ceiling didn’t look like something I wanted to break through,” she jokes, “so I became a successful import/export entrepreneur, but eventu- ally moved on to real estate. I knew I wasn’t going back to any of those lifetimes because I wanted to learn about myofas- cial release work so that I could provide relief for others.” Today, she

offers relief to

anyone with a fascia-related condition, such as TMJ; sciatica; carpal tunnel syndrome; fibromyalgia; chronic fatigue syndrome; scoliosis; osteoarthritis; most head, back, neck and shoulder pain; and some women’s health issues. “I can totally empathize with anyone on my table,” relates Hostler, “because I’ve been there and back.”
