eagerly anticipated for some time now. The revision of the JCT suite published in May 2009 accommodates measures encouraging contractors to work more collaboratively with developers in a number of ways such as:
*suggesting economically viable amendments to proposed works if the variation may result in improved environmental performance
*introducing firmer obligations on the contractor to provide clear information regarding the environmental impact of the supply and use of materials selected
*implementing key performance indicators so that energy performance and ratings under the Code for Sustainable Homes can be specified and progress measured. In achieving sustainable
goals, platforms such as Constructing Excellence, the Forum for the Built Environment and the Business Council for Sustainable Development are superb in bringing people together to work on how lasting change can be brought about by exchanging and implementing best practice. The industry is, and is likely to always be, self-regulating in this field. Legislation must continue to reflect best practice.
Proper implementation of the principles of sustainable development costs serious money and amounts to a sizeable investment for many. The hardest part is in bringing about cultural change in a depressed market, but is what we must ultimately do at every level.
