20 South West Building & Construction

February 2010

First council houses for almost 20 years

EXETER

FOUR affordable housing schemes are due to be built on land owned by Exeter City Council.

The schemes will provide 55 homes for rent for those in need on the Home Choice register. Cllr Laura Newton said: ‘This

is an exciting project and will result in the first council homes being built in the city for almost

20 years. The properties will be built to very high standards and will provide residents with warm, comfortable and affordable homes in which to live.’ All of the new homes will be

built to ‘lifetime homes standards’, future proofing them for people’s needs as they age. One scheme includes a detached house purpose built for

a wheelchair user. Most of the homes will be accessible for those with mobility problems and will be for tenants who are over 55 downsizing from larger properties.

The homes have been designed by eco-architects Gale & Snowden. They will be super insulated and use a mechanical ventilation system that recovers heat from the air in winter. The homes will feature triple glazing and be so well insulated that a traditional heating system will not be necessary. Two of the schemes will be

delivered in partnership with Sovereign Housing Association. The other two sites will be delivered by the city council.
