Earth Day Observance at Town Forest

by Jay Hobson

It was a beautiful day for a nature walk along the trails at the Town

Forest on Saturday. In observance of Earth Day, a day created in 1970 to bring attention to conserving our planet’s natural beauty and resources, the Conservation Commission hosted a nature walk at the town forest, which is located on Shadow Lake Road. Led by Conservation Commission member Julie Vondrak, the group of hikers included Planning Director Ross Moldoff, Selectman Chairman Mike Lyons, Conservation Commission members Linda Harvey and Vinny Drago, and others. Vondrak brought hikers to various points along the trail and highlighted the habitats that can be seen from the trail, including wetlands, turtles sunning themselves along a fallen log, and a turtle- nesting site. “The Town Forest was purchased in 1979 and has grown over the

years to its current size of around 198 acres. Hunting is allowed with a valid hunter’s license during deer season with muzzle loaders and bow and arrow only,” Vondrak said. Hittytitty Brook flows from Shadow Lake and skirts the western edge of the forest along the trail, and provides a variety of habitat for wildlife as it eddies and broadens into wide marsh land and then

A trio of turtles catches some rays on a fallen log

returns to its brook form. According to Vondrak, the various forms of wildlife that can be

observed at the forest include coyotes, fisher cats, various turtles, and countless birds of a variety of colors and calls. The forest is open from dawn to dusk and free parking is

provided. Dogs are allowed and must be leashed, and dog owners are asked to please pick up after their pet to allow others to enjoy the forest.

Barron School Participates in Earth Day Groceries Project

submitted by Lisa Webb, PTA

The Barron School participated in the 17th annual Earth Day Groceries Project, during which the students decorate paper grocery bags with environmental messages. On Earth Day, April 22, the students passed these bags, full of their own groceries, to shoppers at the Market Basket store on Route 28 in Salem. Besides carrying

an environmental message, each bag also has the Barron School name on them and some wonderful artwork. The people in our neighborhood received a very clear and positive message that the students at the Barron School care about their environment. This is the 17th year that this international educational effort has been coordinated on the Internet. The project may be viewed at www.earthdaybags.org for complete information. A report from our school will be added to the Website, so others will know about the effort at our school. This is one of the largest and most well established educational projects on the Internet. It is a non-profit, grassroots effort. The project started in 1994, with 43 schools reporting the decoration and distribution of 13,000 Earth Day Grocery Bags. In 1999, the number of schools reporting in reached nearly 1,200, with students decorating almost 400,000 Earth Day Grocery Bags. Every report from all the previous years is on the Website. There are also thousands of pictures of schools from around the world involved in this project. We are pleased to be part of this effort.

ADOPT ME

Please help Skye. Skye is a beautiful 5 year old Husky Girl who was adopted to a family 3 years ago. Unfortunately her owner passed away so she was returned to us. Poor Skye is devastated at not only losing her person but also being back at the kennel. Skye is a very sweet girl who who has a dream of being loved again and going to a new forever home. She loves to go for

walks and is very happy to hop in the car to go for a ridewalk. She is an alpha girl so is particular about what other dogs

become her best buds but her motherly instincts seem to kick in when a new puppy comes into our shelter. She loves to play and spend time with them! If you think you might have a place in your heart to make Skye's dream of going to her new forever home, or you might be able to foster her so that she can get out of the kennel until her home is found, please complete an adoption application at www.arnne.org. For those who have Husky experience, we truly believe you will love this girl.

Brood Stock Salmon

Fish and Game plans to begin stocking big, brood stock Atlantic salmon into the Merrimack and Pemigewasset Rivers around the first weekend in May. The fish will be spread between stocking sites in Bristol, Franklin, Concord, and Bow. More than 400 brood stock salmon will be released this spring. Fish and Game stocks brood stock Atlantic salmon each spring and fall, giving New Hampshire the only managed Atlantic salmon river fishery in New England. “These are among the best-looking fish that I have seen so far,” Matt Carpenter, the Anandromous Fish Restoration Coordinator said. “Many of the largest fish lack the fin wear that often occurs with hatchery- raised salmon. The average weight of the fish is about the same, eight or nine pounds, but we definitely tagged some giants that will present a challenge for even the most skilled anglers.” To fish for brood stock salmon, anglers need a current New Hampshire fishing license and an $11 brood stock salmon permit.

Brand Print Pie B/W

Dean Tibbetts spends every day manning operations at PSNH’s Schiller Station, helping power the Miss Wakefi eld Diner. And after a hard day at work, he’s been known to recharge with a cup of coffee and a slice of cherry pie in his favorite booth at – where else – the Miss Wakefi eld Diner. So, perhaps it’s fair to ask…
