PMA’s Annual First Grade Science Fair
submitted by Presentation of Mary Academy, Hudson
The first graders at Presentation of Mary Academy worked for weeks studying this year’s topic—“Animals and their Habitats.” The children were given a fact sheet to take home and fill out with their parents. The parents were asked to help their child find the answers to basic questions about their assigned animals. Once the assigned fact sheets were returned to school, the children were taught background information
about habitats. They used the fact sheets to compose a brief report about their animal, while practicing their creative writing, revising, and proofreading skills. A second assignment for homework was for the children to create and make a three- dimensional model of their animal in its habitat. The models had to be made by the children. After weeks of studying and hard work, the children presented their Science
Fair projects during the day at school to the other classes, and that evening to all the first-grade parents. First-grade teachers Mrs. Polombo and Mrs. Lamontagne were beaming with pride because their students did such a wonderful job presenting their models. The children had so much fun while learning so many things about the topic “Animals and their Habitats.”

Mathematics Meets Madness at Hills Garrison School
$1 OFF
submitted by Susan Senecal, Hills Garrison School
In honor of March Madness and our newly acquired fraction- decimal-percent calculation skills, the students and teachers of Hills Garrison School spent an afternoon of shooting hoops and calculating percentages under the guidance of four of the Hudson Memorial School girls’ basketball team members. The “coaches” and former Hills Garrison students Venessa Jacques, Brittany Lambert, Julianne McGrail, and Cassidy Udice guided the students through the calculation of free throw percentages at four stations with varying denominators. The students and teachers would like to thank Venessa, Brittany,
Julianne, and Cassidy for their expertise in shooting hoops, calculating percentages, and combining it all to have some fun with mathematics. We hope to see you next March!

Eagle Sightings over Benson Park
submitted by Benson Park Committee
A mature bald eagle has been seen three times at, or in the vicinity
of, Benson Park. Sightings were reported on March 3, April 5, and April 10. This bird, or these birds, may have been a migrant, or migrants, passing through, but this would be unusual. Eagles are seen along the Merrimack River during winter, but three sightings at this time of year could mean that a pair is looking for a place to nest. Bald eagles are larger than
any hawks in our area. They are dark brown adults that are three years old or older, and have distinctive white heads and tails. All three recent sightings were adults. Eagles can be confused with turkey vultures that are frequently seen flying in spring. They are black and have a “wobbly” flight pattern. Their wings also form a V shape with their body. Eagles have a graceful flight pattern and the wing-to-body profile is flat. If you see an eagle in the Benson Park area, contact Curt Laffin at 889-4643 or
calaffin@comcast.net with the date, time of day, location, and if the bird was flying or on a perch.
