Dundee top of the class

Dundee College has been named College of the Year thanks to a nomination from electrical installation business, McGill. McGill Electrical and Dundee College have had a 20-year relationship in terms of workforce training and development. At first, the college concentrated on training McGill’s

apprentice electricians, but the company’s expansion has fuelled the need for specialist training and consultancy work.

SELECT/Fire & Security Association joint workshop

SELECT held two free promotional workshops in conjunction with the Fire & Security Association (FSA) recently. The FSA is a specialist division of the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) and offers SELECT members assessed under categories 3.3/3.4 for Fire Alarm Systems and 3.8 for Security Systems free membership, with access to a wealth of industry specific support and representation. Among the attendees were existing SELECT/FSA members and some large fire system and security system installers. Hamish Findlay of Assure Alarms, spoke of his delight at joining SELECT and having the opportunity to represent the Fire & Security

industry at the highest level. He said: “This really is a fantastic deal. The fire and security industry has undergone a great deal of change with the introduction of new legislation and guidelines. To have the backing and support of SELECT as well as the expertise and knowledge that the FSA has will help ensure our industry has a clear and powerful voice in its development over the coming years and I’m looking forward to representing the FSA as Scotland’s first Chairman.” Also present were Tony Brend of the National Security Inspectorate (NSI) and Dave Profit of the Security Systems Alarm Inspectorate Body (SSAIB) who explained the function of these two organisations. The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and all the nominations were supported by the business community itself. Not only did Dundee College take that award but also scooped top slot in three other categories before being named College of the Year. Stan McGill, MD of McGill Electrical, said: “Our continued relationship with Dundee College has had significant impact on the business. Without Dundee College’s help we would

not have been able to deliver our renewables strategy.”

Speaking of her delight with the college’s success Principal Christina Potter said: “Colleges are often seen as places of mainstream learning for students on full-time courses seeking vocational qualifications. Whilst this is an important part of our work, the more creative workforce development and knowledge transfer is undertaken on a regular basis.”

Inverness Dinner and Dance

The Inverness dinner and dance was held in March at the Craigmonie Hotel.
