WEST COUNTRY GATES & BARRIERS
VIOLETS
While meandering through a winding wooded glade I chanced upon a fragrant mound of springtime green; a perfumed bed:
all sprouting blushing buds afresh with dew, beneath a spreading canopy of sprawling twisted branches overhead. I stood aloft, in silent awe, at the glorious sight I saw of violets, delicate and shy, sweetly smiling. How long I stared, I know not now, to capture every single stately bloom beneath the weavings of the naked bough, so
entranced was I, that out of winter’s cruel careless gloom: where all that fell of leaf and flower and tree was doomed to die: should
now give all the whisperings of the woodland cause to softly sigh, and I,
stirred by the very soul of everything that beauty is, dared a thought to
question why, I could only stand aloft; just stand aloft, and cry.
