Exchequer, that ‘no name in the list gave him greater pleasure’. Probably John Spear was one of the few names on the list who had not paid the old rogue for their title. Even his old tormentor, Winston Churchill, then the Home Secretary, sent a telegram of congratulation which John Spear generously thought ‘was rather nice of him’. Sir John Spear remained the Member of Parliament for Tavistock until he retired at the general election in 1918.
Hugh Luttrell did not contest the seat again and died in 1918. Hansard records that Sir John Spear contributed to debates on 723 occasions and Hugh Luttrell on 274 occasions. Both men were hard working and popular members who gave their constituents good service, and deservedly, their portraits now hang in the Tavistock Town Hall. Sir John Spear died aged 72 in 1921 and was buried in the cemetery at Lamerton. ■
Pearce, was in Plymouth Road to record the scene. His photographs from a slightly elevated view were taken looking down the road. Abbey Surgery, then a primary school, can be seen in the background. He took a number of photographs as the procession passed and made them into postcards.
Unfortunately all copies have now gone very dark, so perhaps Sydney did not get the chemicals quite right in the developing.
