PHOTOGRAPHERS ON A MISSION

Mission Gallery, Swansea is asking for submissions of photographic artwork from those with a SA or CF postcode to be entered into their annual Mission Photography Open competition. Artists are able to enter a maximum of three pieces to be judged by the gallery’s board of directors, and the winner will receive a prize of £400. A public exhibition of the work submitted will run from Sat 29 May-Sat 10 July and the gallery aims to feature diverse and high quality contemporary photography. All work will be for sale, so it is an excellent opportunity for young artists to show their work in a public exhibition. Last year’s winner was Tom Pope, who has since gone on to study an MA at the Royal College Of Art. For

UNCIVILISATION: FESTIVAL OF THE APOCALYPSE

Festivals are usually pretty joyous affairs. Whether you’re skittering about Glastonbury with a two-litre bottle of cider in one hand and a fistful of m-cat in the other, or perched on a creaky stage at Hay Festival gazing perplexedly at Salman Rushdie’s eyebrows, we’ve come to expect a degree of frivolity and whimsy from the festival season. Well, not anymore. Uncivilisation, surely the world’s first festival of the apocalypse, is built on the premise that “civilisation as we have known it is coming to an end; brought down by a rapidly changing climate, a cancerous economic system and the ongoing mass destruction of the non-human world.” Inviting radical thinkers and writers to Llangollen Pavilion to discuss and challenge the mainstream cultural narratives and think about how we can construct new ones for the future, it’s deliberately poised to clash with Hay Festival from Fri 28-Sun 30 May, and guests will include George Monbiot, Tom Hodgkinson, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly and Chris T-T. Regrettably, Lord Sauron pulled out last week.

FROCK TEASE

Some expert burlesque will be making its way to

Cardiff on Sun 2 May as The Ministry Of Burlesque’s acclaimed High Tease comes to Glee Club. This is not to be sniffed at: The Ministry Of Burlesque produce some of the most critically acclaimed work in the business, and their shows blend sophisticated variety, historical chic and contemporary cabaret to deliver one of the most smouldering shows around. Take that, Harriet Harman.

BAY ZEPPELIN SCHEME TAKES OFF

A giant inflatable balloon will soon be looming over the skies in Cardiff Bay, taking punters into the sky for 25-mile views across the Bristol channel. It’s hoped that the Skyflyer, as it will henceforth be known, will become a beloved feature of Cardiff, rather than a bloated eyesore. It’ll be able to take up to 16 people 400ft into the air, and it’ll reportedly be 31m in length and 17m in diameter. The giant balloon is costing more than £1m to launch, and flights are expected to last 15 minutes. Naturally, it’ll be carrying advertising too, and it’ll even be illuminated for night viewing.
