In the same way that someone who develops a passion in any particular field might, over time, start to focus in on one specific section, Rosemary Hawthorne’s keen interest in fashion and its history seceded to one particular project – to catalogue the development of ladies’ underwear. This first resulted in a book,
Knickers! An Intimate Appraisal, published
in the early 90s, and this has more recently become a touring stage show, where Hawthorne herself is the Knicker Lady. Her oral and visual dash through the garment’s development is essentially humorous, but acknowledges the influence of differing cultures and the evolution of sexual politics along the way.
