RHOD GILBERT

St David’s Hall, Cardiff. Sat 10 Apr

words ANGHARAD BROWN

Rhod Gilbert’s two-hour rant also known as The Cat That Looked Like Nicholas Lyndhurst was always going to be right up my street. We expected dark, angry comedy and that was exactly what we got. You know when a comedy gig opens with “Newport: the only city in the UK where the signs read ‘Kill our children, not your speed’,” that it’s going to be ever so slightly more controversial than a Michael McIntyre performance. However, instead of the uncomfortable awkwardness – as created by a certain distasteful routine by Frankie Boyle – the whole of St David’s Hall fell about laughing.

Being something of a homecoming gig, it was always going to be full of local references but Gilbert did this well. He refrained from the typical “what’s up with that?” gag, and instead used them to help add to his sto- ries, referring to a relaxing (or not) girlie day out with his girlfriend at St David’s Hotel and Spa, testing out the ‘fl ight or fi ght’ theory by running up and down Queen St with an erection and pants full of poo – probably best you try and see the live show or impending DVD to explain that one. His attempts to make the audience feel sorry for him as though the world conspired against him to paint him out to be an angry man were brilliant, as were his desperate pleas to the audience for reassurance that he isn’t actually in need of anger management. A latecomer to comedy, I’m glad to see Gilbert’s popularity is quickly increasing and I strongly recommend you catching him before he has a heart attack induced by a household appliance salesman.
