ARE THERE LOLS ON MARS?

Little Earthling, do you like to laugh? Giggle? Guffaw, perhaps? Then why not take a trip to Panel 9 From Outer Space? That was a rhetorical question, by the way, since there are no valid reasons why you should not go. Any intelligent person knows that. Speaking of intelligence, that’s pretty much what the night consists of. On the first Monday of every month, at 8pm in 10 Feet Tall, two teams of two contestants (comedians, musicians, journalists, playwrights, scientists) are questioned on the nine types of human intelligence to see if they’re worth abducting by aliens. Questions include: What links Mr T and the Stickleback? They both love bling.

This panel show has taken place both in Cardiff and our Anglo-cousin Bristol, with co-creator and bearded funnyman Dan Mitchell describing it as going down well in the past. “The audience go with it and get really involved, sometimes earning points for themselves,” he says. A comedy night with a difference, you’ll leave comically-fulfilled and having learnt enough to pass a Science GCSE. You’re welcome, Planet Earth. Info: www.panel9fromouterspace.com

ART FOR MUGS

Far away from Cardiff’s main art galleries, Strada in Cardiff Bay is an unusual host

for an unusual exhibition. The illy Art Collection is a showcase of 286 espresso coffee cups as interpreted by artists, filmmakers and musicians from Marina Abramovic to Francis Ford Coppola. Cynical marketing ploy for illy, then? Well, perhaps, but anyone who appreciates a good mug will find something interesting here, and the roster of artists is really very impressive. The project stretches back 20 years to the very first illy mug made by designer and architect Matteo Thun, which is now worth £2,500. Coffee and art go together like peaches and cream, so this harmonious union could well be worth a look. The exhibition runs from Thurs 5 until Wed 18 August at Strada in Cardiff Bay.

WHO’S KING OF THE CASTLE?

In a glorious juxtaposition of American melodrama, Welsh spandex and a dash of

good old-fashioned homoeroticism, Harlech Castle will be playing host to a group of professional wrestlers on Sat 1 May, 6.30pm. King Of The Castle is a six-man tournament created to determine the new Welsh Wrestling Heavyweight Champion, and its traditional setting provides a welcome twist on the explosive but rather tired arena battles of American tradition. While everybody else is dancing round the May pole like a bunch of pansies, you can partake in cheering on a grunting scrum of scantily-clad men. Advance tickets are £10 adults, £5 children.
