GUITARISTS are just like chickens. Actually they’re not, I just wanted to get your attention, but now that I think about it there are some similarities (and we’re not just talking about Keef Richards’ legs) especially when it comes to pecking order, which goes something like this. At the lower lev- els there are those guitarists who are revered by the public and above them are the guitarists who are revered by the guitarists who are revered by the public. Higher still are the guitarists who are revered by the guitarists who are revered by other guitarists and the public. At the very top are the guitarists who are revered by the guitarists who are revered by... you probably get the picture. Among those that occupy these stratospheric levels is the extraordinary Andalusian flamenco guitarist Juan Martín. Two years ago Juan walked onto the Level 3 stage at Cardiff’s St David’s Hall armed with nothing more than a Spanish guitar and proceeded to mesmerise the assembled throng with a performance of consummate musicianship. So extraordinary was that performance that, two hours later if a representative from The Guinness Book been present, a new world record for ‘number of dropped jaws in a venue not exceeding 300 ca- pacity’ would easily have been set. Not only did the audience enjoy the performance, so did Juan, who immediately requested a return gig. On May 18th that request will finally be granted as Juan returns to the venue as part of the Roots Unearthed series. This time round, in addition to his guitar, he’ll be accompanied by a spectacular line-up of flamenco dancers and singers includ- ing Salvador ‘El Tigre’ Moreno, a man often re- ferred to as “the Fred Astaire of flamenco”. Em- bracing classical, jazz and modern harmonies while upholding the great flamenco tradition, Juan Martín’s troupe is at the vanguard of mod- ern flamenco. Future gigs at St David’s Hall also include the stunning Hebridean singer Julie Fowlis on Tue 15 June (accompanied by a band to die for) and Brit- ish folk legends The Waterson Family who will be appearing as part of the Welsh Proms on Tue 20 July.
