Cypress Health Region

CYPRESS HEALTH REGION

The Cypress Health region recently

received a $60,000 grant from Sanofi-Aventis, a drug company based out of the United States.

The focus of the grant is to provide funding

for required annual lower limb assessments for people with diabetes. The health region applied for the grant some time ago as part of its lower limb assessment program because “we knew we needed to invest in that a little bit to ensure that was happening,” said Beth Vachon, interim CEO for the health region. “What we really liked about this particular grant is that there was no ties back to the product that this company produces. What they’re looking at is really good chronic disease management and part of diabetes management is lower leg assessments,” she said.

The money will go toward hiring one

registered nurse and one licensed practical nurse on a temporary six-month contract. Together, they will help ensure that all diabetes patients requiring lower limb assessments are caught up. Ultimately, they will help build the health

region’s capacity to facilitate these assessments on a consistent, annual basis by ensuring the facilities and staff are

capable of carrying it out. The program is expected to take effect in

May.

Long-term care assessments to be done at home

The health region is taking a second look at where they carry out long-term care assessments. Traditionally, these assessments take place in the hospital once a patient is admitted. However, programs in other provinces where the patient remains at home for the assessment have recovered a lot of positive feedback, and have delayed many premature long-term care admissions.

“In the hospital is not the best time to do that assessment ... They need to go home and really sort of get back to the area where they feel comfortable, they know their way around, and then do the assessment from there,” Vachon said. Patients are never at the top of their game while admitted in the hospital. Assessing them in a more relaxed, familiar environment will ensure all admissions in to long-term care do not occur quicker than they should. “We know that people want to stay home as long as they possibly can, so if we’re not doing assessments when its the optimal time for them to have that assessment done I think we could at times be doing (them) a disservice,” she said.

Correction on story

SWIFT CURRENT

The court story on pg. 3 of the Friday, April 16 edition of the Prairie Post was incorrect. Troy Swanson, was released on $75,000 cash bail, not the $5,000 as indicated with the article. Furthermore, the bailing hearing from Troy Hayes of Springhill, NS was not adjourned for a further week. The showcause hearing was completed in the late afternoon of Wednesday, April 14. Hayes is granted bail provided he can produce $30,000.
