AHS Baseball Drops Two Close Games

by Sue LaRoche

The Alvirne Bronco squad had the difficult task of facing Division 1-bound pitcher Carson Cross in their home opener against Exeter on Wednesday, April 14. The Broncos dropped a 4-2 decision despite strong pitching from senior Mitch Brun, who allowed only three earned runs over six innings. The Broncos scattered

five hits throughout the contest, including doubles by Coulton Houle, Brun, and Ethan Hurley, and singles by Adam Nardelli and Peter Radziewicz. Hurley and Brun scored the two Bronco runs. On Monday, April 19, the Broncos dropped a heartbreaker to Dover, 8-7. The Green Wave took

a come-from-behind victory, 8-7. The Broncos held a 7-1 lead going into the seventh inning when Dover rallied for six runs, including a grand slam, to tie the score at 7. A single in the eighth inning pushed across the winning run as the Broncos were unable to manufacture any runs in the bottom of the frame. Starting pitcher Travis Terrill pitched well, giving up only one run over six innings before tiring in the seventh. The Broncos capitalized on some poor Dover pitching, including 10 walks and six Dover errors to score most of their runs, as they only managed four hits on the afternoon. Radziewicz had two hits, including a double and a triple, while Brun and Ryan Houle had one hit each.

According to Coach Dave Lelesi, “mental toughness and focus” were the two reasons that the Lady Broncos are now 3-0 on the season in Class L Girls’ Tennis. On Wednesday, April 14, the Lady Broncos defeated Pinkerton, 6-3, on the road,

winning three singles and sweeping the doubles for the victory. Deanna Trearchis, Nicole Wilcox, and Yashaswani Muparthi won in their singles matches. Muparthi and Lahari Venuthurupalli won their third doubles match to put the Broncos up, 4-3. Trearchis and Wilcox clinched the match with a 9-7 come-from-behind victory. Kate Martin and Cheyenne Tessier also came from behind to take a 9-8 victory in a tiebreaker. On Thursday, April 15, the Lady Broncos hosted their first home match of the season and handed Merrimack a 7-2 loss. The Broncos had this one won after the singles matches, as five of the six singles players won, including Trearchis (3-0 on the season), Wilcox (3-0 on the season), Martin, Muparthi, and Venuthurupalli. Trearchis and Wilcox won in first doubles and Janelle Kelly and Gina Lupoli won in third doubles, making this their first varsity victory. Coach Lelesi is pleased with the girls’ efforts so far, but knows that “we need to continue to get better as the season

On Thursday, April 15, the Broncos traveled to Merrimack to take on an illness-ridden Tomahawk squad and swept them, 9-0. The Tomahawks defaulted sixth singles and third doubles due to a lack of personnel, giving the Broncos an early, 2-0 lead. Alvirne had singles victories from Linh Nguyen, Will Livingston, Emre Semen, Shane O’Brien, and Evan LaRoche, with Jeremy Poulin as the recipient of the default. In doubles, the Broncos

got victories from LaRoche and Semen and Poulin and Travis Terrio, and Brad Dupuis and Tom Eldredge earned the point at third doubles. On Wednesday, April 14, the Broncos hosted a

very talented Pinkerton squad and lost, 7-2. Co- captain O’Brien and senior LaRoche picked up the only two victories for the Broncos in fourth and fifth singles.

“Pinkerton is a talented and very deep squad,” complimented Coach Sue LaRoche. “I was proud of our players as we were in every match, but could not pull out the point when we needed it.” She concluded by saying, “hopefully, it was a good learning experience for the boys.” The Broncos will host Salem on Monday,

the Lady Broncos opened their season on the road with a thriller against Exeter. Alvirne walked away with a well- earned 8-7 victory to go 1-0 on the season, giving pitcher Jess Underwood her first varsity victory. The Lady Broncos opened the first inning with a run as freshman Mikayla Powlowsky singled and went to third on a bunt by sophomore Nicole Abreu. She then came home on a fielder’s choice to take an early, 1-0 lead, but Exeter slowly piled on two runs in the second, third, and fifth innings to take a 6-1 lead. Rally caps were on in the sixth inning, however, when freshman Jenna Giannelli walked and Delaney Burns singled. After a fielder’s choice, Katie Donovan singled, scoring

Giannelli. With two outs, the Broncos had some clutch hitting by Abreu (single and RBI), and doubles by Taylor Carbone and Chelsey Drew (two RBIs each) to take an 8-6 lead. Exeter scored once in the seventh, narrowing the gap to one run. With the bases loaded in the home half of the seventh, Underwood struck out her seventh batter of the game to ground the Blue Hawk attack and give the Broncos the 8-7 squeaker.

On Monday, April 19, the Broncos traveled to Dover only to lose a heartbreaker to the Green Wave. Pitcher Carbone had a no hitter going into the seventh inning when she gave up a home run, the only run scored in the game, to take a tough, 1-0 loss. Carbone had seven strikeouts on the night.
