course some of this recognition is a result of having played alongside the World Number One – Adolfo Cambiaso – in the Dubai high-goal polo team. “I have been lucky to play with Cambiaso for a considerable time and so, of course, my game has improved accordingly,” explained Ali. However his sons – Tariq and Rashid – have also obviously benefited from some instruction from Cambiaso. “I find it much easier to play than watch my sons play, especially as I cannot give them any advice as they are better than me! There has been plenty of success for the Dubai team, who operate out of an impressive stable complex in Paley Street in Berkshire during the UK high-goal season. The team has notched up victories in both the
one of them, let alone both.” Fortunately one of these tournaments is at one of Albwardy’s favourite polo clubs – Guards Polo Club, although, not surprisingly, his “favourite place to play polo is at the home of the sport - Argentina”. In fact, this patron was spotted watching Cambiaso win his fifth Argentine Open in early December with his La Dolfina team – accompanied by his Dubai team manager and Desert Palm polo co-ordinator Martin Valent.
...Although we have had success in the past, one still requires some luck to win one of them, let alone both...
Gold Cup and the Queen’s Cup and Ali recalls “my proudest moment was to win the Gold Cup in the same season as the Prince of Wales and the Queen’s Cup”. Plans for this year’s season are already well under way. “This year we have a good team and good horses and as usual we will go for both The Queen’s Cup [at Guards Polo Club] and the Gold Cup [at Cowdray Park],” said Albwardy. “Although we have had success in the past, one still requires some luck to win
Albwardy is not just confining his high-goal hopes to the UK though. He would love to see Dubai field a high-goal team and says: “It has always been my dream that Dubai would, at some time, be able to put out a high-goal team. It will obviously
take time but I will carry on dreaming this dream till I die.” So in the not too distant future, Cartier International Day at Smith’s Lawn may well involve a 22-goal Dubai team in action against the England squad on The Queen’s Ground. If that does happen I am sure that Albwardy will be more than happy to invite the England team for a rematch at his own Desert Palm Polo Club. Surely the hardest part will be keeping Ali Albwardy on the sidelines?
