Francesca and Urs Schwarzenbach

I have come to terms with the fact that I might have to die without having my name engraved on the trophy.” The accident that he referred to happened in June 2006 at Guards Polo Club during a Black Bears league match in The Queen’s Cup. Although he made a full recovery, Schwarzenbach had to retire from playing and is not that keen on watching the sport these days. “I don’t watch Guy unless I am told to by my wife. Watching polo bores me rigid – the game is

always at the wrong end of the field. My friend Christopher Hanbury even goes to watch his boys’ practice games!” However Schwarzenbach did not walk away from the sport completely. He is President of the St Moritz Polo Club – home of the St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow – and holds the same post at his Garangula Club in Australia. Two years ago he was invited to become a Vice-Chairman of Guards Polo Club and since then he has been an active member of the Board. “I think that I was invited to join the Board to bring in both the international and professional aspects and Charlie [Stisted] had seen what we had done in St Moritz. We had realised that in order to survive you have to go commercial and cannot wait for handouts from patrons or, in Guards’ case, from the Crown Estate or the Army.

Schwarzenbach is a fan of the reciprocal arrangement between the two clubs. “St Moritz is more international because we are

Swiss and so we can help Guards Polo Club, especially when it wants to go abroad and Guards can also help us out too. We are not in competition with each other – we are equal. The reciprocal arrangement is just uniting two very good brands.” Although Schwarzenbach is modest about his polo achievements, his experience at the very highest level of the sport adds invaluable credibility to the Board of Guards Polo Club. He brings wise counsel not

only as a former player but also as an administrator of the sport. Guards Polo Club is proud of its title of Europe’s leading polo club – surely with Schwarzenbach on side then that title is assured for many years to come.
