with the development of Flemish Farm. Not only is the Club creating two new grounds at the Club’s stables, but it has applied for planning permission for an all-weather arena. This has only been possible with the support of our President and Philip Everett and his team at the Crown Estate. This new development will enable the Club to create a centre of excellence for schools and universities polo and our members. As Guards Polo Club is already home to the Jack Wills Varsity Day, the Eton polo team and Schools and Universities Polo Association (SUPA) Day, it is fitting that the Club expands its status as a renowned venue for youth polo. Our senior players have not been forgotten either. Following on from the creation of the new Clubhouse in 2009, which boasts luxuries unseen at other clubs, we are now focusing on the players and their families. Our aim is to provide stress-free playing at all levels and a high level of comfort for our supporters. This may be just simple things like providing an improved online booking service for all our tournaments or bigger tasks such as improved management of the ground. The Polo Office will continue to focus on improving the umpiring and I am delighted to welcome back Howard Hipwood and Glen Gilmore to the umpiring team. In addition, the Club’s Polo Manager, Oliver Ellis, has been invited to join the Hurlingham Polo Association’s Handicap Committee. This year will also see the launch of Guards Polo Club’s Professional Domestic Umpire Group. These experienced umpires will also umpire at lower goal games to provide consistent standards of umpiring throughout the season.

The Club continues to take its experience across the polo globe too. The senior management team headed out to Dubai last month to work alongside Ali Albwardy’s team at Desert Palm at the Cartier International Dubai Polo Challenge. I am thrilled

that so many members of Guards Polo Club took the opportunity to attend this event and it was great to see some Club players in action too. The St Moritz World Cup Polo on Snow Championships was also a home from home. Ellis and Gilmore were on the field and Florencia Cavalieri was working hard in the back office. responsibilities, but we take pride in the fact that we have successfully exported our polo expertise to new markets. These forays abroad are valuable revenue streams for the Club, and a secure financial position has enabled us to produce an extensive and varied fixture list once more with tournaments for all handicap levels. The highlight of the year will be the 50th anniversary of The Queen’s Cup and we hope to welcome HM The Queen to the Club on Sunday 13 June to present her trophy to the 50th winning patron. Various events are being arranged to commemorate this anniversary, including a celebratory dinner in the Clubhouse on 10 June. However to ensure our continued success it is vital that everyone who comes to Smith’s Lawn has an enjoyable experience – be it a 10-goal professional or a local resident with non playing membership. Their demands may be very different, but we hope that by getting the ambience and standards right, all of our members will thoroughly enjoy any time that they spend with us. So thank you for supporting your club.
