True allegiance

would be the first to admit that the recent worldwide financial crisis did provide a few sleepless nights, but I had forgotten about the loyalty of our members, players, sponsors and corporate partners. Their support has been overwhelming – especially as these difficult times are affecting everyone. However this loyalty has allowed the Club to consolidate on what it does best, which is to deliver world-class polo and polo events.
It is times like these when Guards Polo Club comes to the fore among its peers by addressing its basics first. Of course the fundamental basic in this sport is pony welfare – an area which the Club has been at the forefront of for many years. Guards Polo Club is the only polo facility in the UK which provides a vet, medics and ambulance at every game – be it 22-goal or 2- goal. Recently, while reviewing the Club’s polo related overheads I was surprised when seeing the figures
Loyalty may be an old fashioned word, but Charles Stisted looks ahead to an exciting decade at Smith’s Lawn, thanks to members’ and sponsors’ extraordinary support
in isolation, that the totals for these essential and sometimes lifesaving services work out at almost £2,000 per game, but of course we always consider this money well spent. In 2010, there will be the added facility of a purpose-built vet box in the number one pony lines. This is equipped to take a mobile x-ray machine and is registered as a dispensary for the Scott-Dunn veterinary practice. Other welfare initiatives include vending machines and free coffee carts in the pony lines because human welfare is as important to us as pony welfare. These standards enhance the Club’s core philosophy of providing the best amateur-professional polo possible. With that ethos in mind the team at Smith’s Lawn has worked hard to improve the Club’s corporate governance, striving to create consistency with everything we do. We could not have achieved this without the support of the Board and the Club’s committees. Praise must also go to the Crown Estate – our patient landlords who have worked alongside us in creating our innovative vision for the future of Guards Polo Club. The strength of this relationship became apparent over the past year
