Bob Hoskins, Joan Collins, Richard Wilson, Charlotte Rampling and Honor Blackman enjoyed lunch in the Dunhill marquee and a unique fashion show highlighting Dunhill’s forthcoming autumn and winter collection for men. To keep the links with the polo, many of the runway models were the UK’s aspiring young players. Other invaluable sponsors over the years have included Hildon, Cartier, Harcourt Developments and Rothmans.

So what happened in 2009?

The almost all-English Apes Hill team took the honours after a thrilling and sometimes tense final against Sumaya that went into extra time. Charlie Hanbury scored the winning goal in a seventh chukka. While Sumaya had not capitalized on two good chances to score in the extra time, Hanbury had kept his nerve and produced the winning shot to give Apes Hill their first Queen’s Cup victory in the third year of asking. Oussama Aboughazale’s Sumaya had impressed at every stage of this tournament, thanks to the two young stars of the team, Hilario Ulloa and Ignus Du Plessi. So it was no surprise when

the latter was rewarded with the Pommery/The Polo Magazine Most Valuable Player Award from HM The Queen. He also received the Best Playing Pony Award for an eight-year-old mare that he had played in the second and sixth chukkas. In addition, HM The Queen, accompanied by Pat Docherty of Harcourt Developments, presented a Best Retrained Racehorse Award to a 13-year-old bay mare which had been played by Luke Tomlinson in the fifth chukka. The day had started with the

subsidiary final. George Milford Haven’s Broncos team defeated La Bamba de Areco in a thrilling game.
