that allows both new and old buildings to operate effectively and sustainably and that lends itself to exciting, imaginative and radical designs and solutions.

Timber frame construction is a fast building

method which provides a lightweight structure. Insulated render systems are applied directly onto the sheathing boards of the timber frame. Systems can be designed, with drained and ventilated cavities, to meet the requirements of NHBC. Designers are now able to significantly increase thermal and acoustic performance levels and achieve lowest U-values. This method of construction enables large structures to be erected, made watertight, and finished externally at high speed. It lends itself to off-site, partially factory construction, which helps to meet the Egan Report requirements. Insulated render is particularly suitable for coastal properties where attention to the detailing is needed to ensure protection against extreme weather conditions. Insulated renders have been used to envelop modern construction methods to

meet current and future standards and to enable imaginative aesthetic design to use the curved surfaces currently demanded. The wide range of coloured renders, very often

in different colour bands separated by painted tape boards, can provide striking colour finishes and can be used to interesting effect to give an eye-catching result. Typical examples of this are two winners in the

residential category of the INCA Andy Swan Awards (2009) for the best use of external wall insulation, sponsored by the Insulated Render and Cladding Association. The winner is the Sands, Scarborough; a new

development of 55 acres set within spectacular woodland scenery overlooking North Bay, Scarborough. Constructed on a lightweight metal frame the insulated render system applied had to have accreditation for this purpose. The system, specified by Tolent Construction,

consisted of 140mm of mineral fibre insulation, finished with a white through-coloured acrylic render, achieving a U-value of at least

0.30W/m2

K. This complemented timber

cladding, also used on the facades. Products had to be fire-safe, thermally efficient and environmentally friendly. Burbo Point, Hall Road West, Crosby,

was highly commended. The development consists of new luxury apartments situated on the Formby coastline and includes a penthouse reminiscent of a circular lighthouse in the design. Weathering from the elements was the prime consideration in choosing an insulated render system coupled with an aesthetically pleasing appearance and outstanding thermal performance. RAL Architects Ltd specified an external

wall insulation system consisting of 50mm expanded polystyrene, finished with a rolled texture silicone render, to clad the medium density solid block walls. The system incorporated specially designed rails and channels to create a cavity to prevent the entrapment of moisture and facilitate air circulation along with detailing to prevent moisture penetration. The silicone render finish provides high vapour permeability, water shedding capability and resistance to surface dirt. The INCA Register of systems, giving their

external wall insulation is one of the key measures to maximise the impact of Building Regulations, now and in the future, on Climate Change. The process will improve the U-values of walls to 0.27W/m2

K or lower without difficulty.
