British Curry Awards®

The British Curry Awards has now been Trade Mark registered with the Intellectual Property Office as part of efforts to help protect the brand and clearly distinguish it from other types of awards.

Justin Ali, director and producer , says, “If anyone tries to copy our name to capitalise on the British Curry Awards’ reputation we will now be able to take Court action. Any other organisation wishing to stage a similar award show will need a licence from us.”

A number of awards shows have tried to copy-cat BCA and these are confus- ing for the industry. The Trade Mark protection will ensure there is greater clarity in future.

The registration was granted by the UK Intellectual Property Office on the basis that the words British Curry Awards have become distinctive of the annual gala event. It is a formal rec- ognition of the reputation and conse- quent goodwill that The British Curry Awards has built up within the industry with this brand. The registration of the trade mark will help to put people off using it without permission. It allow The British Curry Awards Limited to take legal action against anyone who uses the trade mark without permission and will permit Trading Standards Officers or the police to bring criminal charges against counterfeiter if they use the trade mark. It will also assist in pre- venting infringement by people using similar marks in relationship to ser- vices that are identical with, or simi- lar to, those that The British Curry

Awards provide, if there is a likelihood of confusion.

Plans are well advanced for this year’s British Curry Awards 2010. The date has been confirmed as Sunday 21st November 2010 at the Grosvenor House in London, so please pencil that in your diary. This year’s big name host will be announced soon. So keep looking out for more information on

the website (www.britishcurryaward. co.uk) and in the media.

Nominations for BCA 2010 are now being accepted and there is informa- tion about how to do this on page 49 of this magazine. Bookings for tables for the event are also being taken and we would urge you to book early to avoid disappointment.
