Obituary

Spice Business is sad to report the death of Al Hajj Tara Miah in March this year at St Mary’s hospital in Paddington. He was 75 and leaves behind a wife, a son, two daughters and a number of grandchildren. His fi rst namaz e janaza was held on 17th March at the East London Mosque and the second at his village Ranaping Fazilpur in the Gopalgonj district of Sylhet, Bangladesh. He was buried at the family graveyard in the village.

Although Tara Miah was a restaura- teur by profession he was intimately involved with numerous institutions in the UK and Bangladesh. The founder and chairman of Notun Din, one of the oldest Bengali weeklies in UK

and a community leader, he was also a director of the Mercantile Bank of Bangladesh, a founder trustee and vice chairman of Bangladesh Center UK and founder chairman of Al Hajj Tara Miah Khan International Academy and Tara Miah Khan Foundation in Bangladesh. He received many awards in Bangladesh, including the Deshbondhu Chittoronjon Award and the Haji Shariat Ullah Honorary Award, for his contribution to society.

Bangladesh High Commissioner and Chairman, Bangladesh Center Dr M Sayeedur Rahman said he was deeply saddened at Al Hajj Tara Miah’s death. He said the Bangladeshi community in the UK and Bangladesh had lost a man

who was loved by all and that the void left by his death could not be fi lled.

Spice Business would like to convey its condolences and sympathy to Al Haj Tara Miah’s family and its staff prays for his departed soul. The curry indus- try has indeed lost a great man.
