Fairtrade farmers in UK visa ban

Fairtrade supporters have reacted angrily to a decision to deny three Palestinian olive farmers access to the UK, preventing them from attend- ing this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight.

The ban on the farmers, who were to be guests of the UK-based social enterprise Zaytoun, comes exactly one year after the farmers’ became the first olive oil producers in the world to be awarded Fairtrade status. The trio were due to take part in a packed schedule of events and talks across the UK during Fairtrade Fortnight. Cathi Pawson, director of UK-based Zaytoun, commented, “We find it very strange that a Palestinian olive farmer, participating in a multi-million EC

funded food security project, invited by a UK company, accompanied by a lead- ing British NGO, and hosted by groups across the country, cannot get a visa for Fairtrade Fortnight..”

The UK Borders Agency refused to grant the three olive farmers UK visas allowing them to participate in radio interviews, schools talks, shop samplings, faith gatherings and offi- cial receptions on the grounds that the farmers had insufficient proof of income and family ties. The visa applications are however said to have clearly stated that Zaytoun and its NGO partner were covering all expenses and arrangements.

Curry sauce not cheap as chips!

Cobra beer has joined forces with renowned chef Cyrus Todiwala to create a connoisseur’s curry sauce. Glistening with gold leaf, the sauce is worth £36 a portion and includes Morel mushrooms costing £150 per kilo.

Cyrus was so proud of his creation that he sold it in his award-winning restau- rant, Café Spice Namasté, throughout National Chip Week. He says, “We’re a

Indian hospitality sector to create 100,000 jobs in 3 yrs

The hospitality sector in India will require 100,000 trained personnel over the next three years.

Sunil Kothari, a senior official of the Hotel and Restaurant Association (HRA), said there were nearly 100,000 hotel rooms under development in the tourist spots in India, and that there was a need to hire the same number of trained professionals soon. “The average ratio is one trained person per hotel room.”

“There are nearly 100,000 hotel rooms being constructed all over the coun- try. The arithmetic is simple,” Kothari, a hotelier from Aurangabad, who has been appointed chairman of the dia- mond jubilee celebrations of the HRA said.

Kothari, however, said that the cur- rent rate at which both government owned and other private hotel man- agement institutions were churning

out manpower was not enough to meet the envisaged demand.

“In the next three years, only 25,000 trained persons are expected to pass out of all the hotel management insti- tutions in India” Kothari said, adding that the hospitality industry had devised very short courses ranging from six to eight weeks to meet the shortfall of trained manpower.

The western association of the HRA, which comprises states like Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Gujarat completes 60 years of existence this year.
