SOUTHERN ALBERTA✦GOLF GUIDE

MONDAY, APRIL 19, 2010 ✦ Lethbridge Herald – Medicine Hat News – 2

“I’mhoping for a scholarship, but I haven’t looked into anything yet. That‘s probably something I‘ll do in Grade 12,” saidMartin, who plays out of theMedicineHat Golf and Country Club. Martin, Batsel, who plays out of the Connaught Golf Club,

andWerre, who shares time between Redcliff’s Riverside Golf Club andDesert Blume, have all had plenty of success in recent years. Werre and Batsel both played in the Canadian junior championships last summer, Batsel won the Alberta junior crown andMartin claimed first place at the high school championships. All won numerous tournaments in 2009 against a variety of junior and sometimes adult competitors. All three feel it’s important to play the different clubs within

the community. “For me, it’s a good time to work on both shot and club selections. Each club offers something different and I think that helps my game overall,” said Batsel, whowon last year’s SoutheasternOpen at the Connaught Golf Club, making him one of the youngest ever to win the prestigious event. “You play somany different courses during the summer in competitions, so it only makes sense forme to play asmany of the courseswe have here,” addedWerre. “I agree withDillon,” saidMartin. “The more courses you

play, the more it tests your different shot and club selections.” This summer will prove to be busy for all three.Martin will

attend the provincial junior girls championships in Edmonton, while Batsel andWerre will participate in the Alberta junior boys in Sundre aswell as the Canadian juniors in Richmond, B.C. and Canadian Amateur inQuebec. Werre says he is happy where his game is right now, but also

feels the work is never done. “The big thing forme ismaking putts and that is always something Iwork on. Right now,my driver has been good for me,” he said. ForMartin, getting off the tee is her focus. “My putting is always up there forme, but my long game is

what I need to work on.My coach has changed my swing and I’mnot surewhat I’mfeeling about that right now,” added Martin. The one thing all three have in common as athletes is they

play in a team atmosphere. Batsel andMartin play basketball, whileWerre is a hockey player. “They’re both different approaches,” said Batsel, a league

all-star for theMedicineHatHighMohawks this past winter. “In a team sport, when you win, you obviously have teammates to share it with. In individual sports like golf, when you don’t dowell, you have nobody to blame but yourself.” “The one thing about golf, it’s your own fault when you don’t

perform. If you don’t succeed, don’t point the finger at anyone but yourself, addedWerre. “In basketball, you have other people out there with you, but

in golf, it’s just you, and you dealwith a lotmore things. You knowwhen you’ve put your work into your game,” said Martin. Andwhile theymaybe rivals on the course,Werre says he

and Batsel try to play golf together every other day. “We feed off each other, and I thinkwe both make each

other better players.” For bothWerre and Batsel, TigerWoods’ return to the game,

couldn’t have come quick enough. “He’smy favourite player and his return has been, for sure,

the best thing for golf,” said Batsel. “I just love his intensity and his willingness to show emotion,” addedWerre.
