Bruce Kulick BK3

6 years in the making, this former Kiss guitarist’s 3rd solo album is what he says it is; “I feel like this is my Revenge” he claims- he’s right.

BK3

Bruce Kulick Release Date 3/132010

Surely the most talented of Kiss’s ex-guitarists, Kulick is a tasty rock player, and an overlooked songwriter. Guests abound on “BK3” but as Bruce notes, “Many albums lack cohesion with different vocalists but my guitar playing is the glue.” There’s stunt casting with Gene Simmons and son

Nick each singing lead on different tracks, but best fits are John Corabi on “No Friend Of Mine”, and The Knack’s Doug Fieger on the pop-ish “Dirty Girl”. The highlight - a guitar duet with Steve Lukather on “Between The Lines”. Based on what I’ve heard today, I hope Kulick doesn’t make us wait another six years!

KEY CUTS: “Between The Lines”, Dirty Girl”, “And I Know”

Dave Matthews

Live in Las Vegas Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds

& Tim Reynolds Live In Las Vegas

This is their third album- all live- together, and if two guys with acoustic guitars blowing out some tasty jams is your idea of a good time, this is your record.

Release Date 2/9/2010

When Matthews was still a bartender, Reynolds encouraged his musical ambitions. They’ve remained tight friends over the years, coming occasionally to play with each others bands, and play live acoustic

gigs together. I’ve always liked Dave as a lyricist (his “Gravedigger” is an all-time favorite) and a singer, and there’s just something intimately inspiring about a couple of guys bangin’ on acoustic guitars- especially if they can play, and these guys can. The 26 songs that make up “Vegas” include a surprising cover of Zeppelin’s “Kashmir”, and they play with passion and commitment. Great? No. Entertaining? HELL yeah.

KEY CUTS: “Alligator Pie”, “Kashmir”, “Lying In the Hands Of God”

Hawksley Workman Meat

Meat

It’s been awhile since I’ve checked out Hawksley (“Between The Beautifuls”), but with a gig happening next week in Trail as I write, it’s time. Holy SHIT kids, you’d better strap in before you put this on.

Hawksley Workman Release Date 1/19/2010

There’s so much going on here that it is impossible to absorb in one pass. From the over-driven guitars, compressed production, and the random ambient room noises, it feels like I’ve been run over by a 4-by-4 with big, knobby tires.

“Meat” is a raw, fearless take on the end of a relationship, but Workman also has another new album out (“Milk”) with

an overall dance/pop feel, that could be more your speed. “Meat” is dark, violent and troubling, sometimes hard to listen to, but it is sooo worth the effort it takes to get inside.

KEY CUTS: “Tokyo Bicycle”, “Song For Sarah Jane”, “Chocolate Mouth”

Joe Satriani Live In Paris: I Just Wanna Rock

Live In Paris:

Satch’s 14th album is live, two discs, heaving with over the top, mad scientist shredding that’ll leave you dripping with sweat and thrumming with inspiration.

I Just Wanna Rock Joe Satriani Release Date 02/02/2010

Some guitarists play as if they were born to it. For Satriani it’s in his blood, and he’s a fine songwriter too. “LIP” was recorded in Paris in ’08 and, like any great live record, the energy

exchange between artist and audience is tangible. There’s a fierce energy to his old warhorses here that, in most cases, takes them beyond the studio originals. “Satch’s Boogie” nearly melted my headphones, and “Summer Song” with its sing-along intro, is an 8-minute boogie-tastic party. I’m no guitarist, but “Live In Paris” makes me want to be. Check out the companion DVD too, including an excellent 40 minute interview from German Television.

KEY CUTS; already mentioned, plus “Time Machine”, “I Just Wanna Rock”, “Flying In A Blue Dream”
