Andrew’s Charity of Choice: The Mocha Club

Barrett Ward knows that, given the opportunity, most people would willingly donate the price of two cups of coffee to make a difference in someone’s life. So he founded The Mocha Club in Nashville, Tennessee, with a mind to changing lives among the poverty stricken in Africa. As founder, Barrett Ward aptly points out, ‘With only a few dollars – rather than thousands – to spare, many people feel like their efforts to give are like dropping a pebble into the Grand Canyon.’ It was with this thought in mind that Ward thought to ask what the minimum amount of money for the maximum amount of help was. He found the magic number to be seven bucks, about the price of two cups of coffee.

“I’ve always tried to give in some way or another,” Allen says, “But when I first asked where I needed to be helping out I looked at Africa. I thought we’d be helping the Aids effort, or hunger, and was shocked to discover that in parts of Africa there are very serious social problems around children who are orphaned by the ravages of disease. I was deeply affected to learn that there is little infrastructure to care for theses kids and that many of them suffer a terrible fate. It was just ridiculous for me to hear this. There was no question where I needed to be putting my time and resources.
