As we come out of the well earned 'holiday season', our economy still appears to be 'caught in the headlamps', where we are staring ahead, and trying hard to progress, but just not sure which way to jump .. be it to safety and growth, or into the glare and uncertainty that it could bring. At best messages about 'recovery' still remained mixed, however there has been slight movement with more positives being mooted, and certainly a welcome reduction in business failures in our sector.

My objective is that our Association will continue to look for opportunities to add value to the membership which will retain existing, and attract new members who will benefit all by their active involvement, and to this end our June National Council meeting focused on 'Planning for the Future' a strategy meeting where we examined the tactics we can deploy to make our association more attractive to all. We examined a wide range of opportunities that are available to grow the membership of the Association, focusing on enhancing end user awareness, and looking at potential for membership from manufacturers of Power Tools, PPE & safety related products, Clothing, Hand Tools, Lubricants, Fleet hire etc, … all industries that are related to the distribution and manufacture of welding related products which many of you sell The potential for 'Welding World' was also discussed, looking at how we could achieve circulation to a much larger end user data base, links with other aligned industry Trade Associations and their publications and, as we now have a growing relationship with the H&SE, how we can engage with them as a vehicle to drive their's and our message to end users. We also discussed how / if we could develop a 'Kite Mark' standard for membership (not without its difficulties) and looking at other Associations for alignment or to benchmark our own activities. Regional meetings were also high on the agenda, as these are considered to be the lifeblood for local engagement by existing members', and the showcase for potential new members. Each Regional Chair has committed to running a meeting in the second half of the year (see page 21 for dates) and we plan to ensure these will bring real value with relevant subject matters and speakers you will want to hear from. We ask for your support through attendance and sponsorship/venue hosting will be welcomed.

I have only touched on a few of the agenda items discussed and actions agreed, which I hope provides you with some thoughts on how we are progressing to build your association into a vibrant, active participator and influencer in the supply chain

Remember this is your Association, your views, contribution and ideas are very important to us, so please feel free to contact me, council members, your regional chair or our Director Mike Hill. We will be delighted to hear from you.

The next major event for our industry is Schweissen und Schneiden, in September, and I wish all members whether exhibiting or visiting, a good and productive show, there will be plenty to see with numerous new products being launched by manufacturers, and plenty of old friends to meet up with again. The power of networks … your association !
