The EPA at 40 shows a history of promong important policies and regulaons to control the release of toxic and harmful pollutants. Although that job isn’t done, Hecht says, “The EPA aiming for its 50th birthday must focus on advancing science and technology, the princi- ples and pracces that make sustainability operaonal in urban designing managing water systems, and in the producon of goods and services.

“Now is a new era for EPA with a strong emphasis on sustainability and a green economy. Progress toward sustainability must come at all levels of the economy from local to state to naonal and internaonal.”

The more people understand the importance of sus- tainability, the more they will take appropriate ac- ons, he says. The EPA has been commied to providing public informaon on pollutants, but, look- ing ahead, they will aim to provide more informaon on product design and manufacturing from a life cycle approach.
