ruly, the future of Rotary is in your hands as we now begin the preparations for Building Communities and Bridging Continents. It has been said that history is made today as
we create the past and plan for the future. Certainly as the first decade of the 21st Century comes to an end, all the challenges of the new century which we embraced ten years ago are still very much with us and our preparations for the next year of Rotary service have once again been launched at the RI Assembly in San Diego in January. Now we know the theme as well as the colour of the jacket! As with all RI Assemblies, there was change and
innovation: the internationality was highlighted by a House of Friendship in the plenary sessions, with presentations from RI Directors in their own native languages and in an extended spouses programme to which all participants were invited, by a three day world seminar featuring South Asia, Africa and Europe. Indeed, our partners were kept very busy with their own discussion groups and particularly their cultural exchange aſternoon, when a display presenting England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales proved to be a big hit; especially the lavender bags – all 350 of them! Aſter Assembly, we held the third RI board
meeting of the current Rotary year which still has five exciting months to go. Tere is not space in this digest to identify all the information which was provided and list all the decisions made. Crucially, and most welcome, was the news of the substantially improved financial position with net investment returns being 16.1% compared to -20.9% for the same six month period last year. Conversely, and worryingly, membership statistics showed a loss of nearly 20,000 as at 31st December. On a positive note, the chartering of the Rotary Club of Ramallah has brought the return of Rotary to Palestine and hope to the Middle East. You will hear more of the changes proposed for
next year, but this year, 2009-10, remains our priority. Tomorrow is another day and by the time you read this, Tanks for Life will have joined the past but will, I'm sure, have stimulated the future and be repeated in the years ahead. It was a most welcome experience to be on the board at it’s January meeting when Tanks for Life and RIBI were featured in the Public Relations Report. Together we, the 29 districts in RIBI can make a real difference and ensure that the future of Rotary is, indeed, safe in our hands.

he last 18 months have been a difficult period for clubs and districts looking for matching grants due to the decrease in available world funds. However, the future looks brighter as
from 1st July 2010 the maximum grant awarded to club and districts will increase to $200,000 making it possible to undertake larger projects than before. Along with this good news the Secretariat has
been looking at new opportunities for clubs that will help them support local projects through grants and funding that is available via the Government and National Lottery for example. By the time you read this article we will have launched a ‘Funding Search’ in the Members’ Area of the RIBI website. Tis search will enable clubs and districts in Britain and Ireland to access almost 9000 funding opportunities that are researched and updated every day. Tere will be a comprehensive search engine e.g. location, purpose etc. and the opportunity to view eligibility criteria for funding before completing unnecessary applications. We hope that this initiative will save clubs time and work. We will also be able to monitor the usage by clubs. Log on to the Members’ Area of the website with your email address and password and give it a try and don’t forget to let us know what you think, your feedback is always appreciated. Meanwhile the staff at the Secretariat have also
been doing their bit to fundraise over the last few months – successful ventures have included an Indian buffet with proceeds going to Children in Need, a Burns night supper for Haiti and a Pancake Race in aid of End Polio Now (shown leſt) and as I write plans are well underway for a Tanks for Life day on the 23rd of February… and don’t worry this is all fitted into lunch times or evenings and doesn’t disrupt the provision of support!
Switching subjects, we have now sold well in excess
of 100,000 pieces of marketing for membership toolkit over the last nine months. We will continue to expand on the tools that you need to attract new members and support you in designing material and offering advice on your local marketing and public relations ideas. Please continue to support the next phase of the
new members’ recruitment campaign into 2010-11, as Marks & Spencer say ‘Tere is no plan B’.
