Annual Report
COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE
Communications Committee Chairman, John Minhinick, reports a stimulating year with the appointment of a Head of Marketing staff member. Fresh marketing ideas from our new expert have been a positive contribution to planning the future of Rotary. Te Rotarian members of the committee and Head of Marketing, David Bryant, spent considerable effort balancing existing methods and procedures with new proposals. Tere were some inevitable differences along the way but the outcome should leave RIBI a stronger organisation with better public awareness and a more stable membership.
Te monthly newsletter, Eye on the Wheel, continued to be a popular part of the information flow to districts and clubs.
Website
A new RIBI website came on line at the end of 2009. Initial teething problems were quickly resolved and our new, more outward facing, site not only provides valuable information to Rotarians and non-Rotarians but is now a valuable tool supporting administrative processes.
Te RIBI website template system continued to offer a website facility to clubs and districts. Around 40% of clubs use the system, in addition to half of the districts, each making an annual donation of £50 to the Rotary Foundation for the use of the facilities. Over the last four years this has raised around £100,000.
Magazine
Rotary Today carried many excellent stories in an attractive layout. Our partners, KM Media, increased advertising, even in a recession. Tis continues to offset a substantial portion of the production costs. Te contract with KM Media was renewed for another five years.
At a meeting of Rotary-wide editors in Montreal, John Pike was quizzed by many editors about the use of advertising to offset costs. Many Rotary magazines carry little or no advertising. It was clear from the meeting that Rotary Today is considered to be one of the best regional magazines and is respected world-wide.
PR
Te Full Circle photo exhibition helped to highlight Rotary’s polio eradication initiative to businesses, charities and professionals in the music and entertainment industry. It also generated articles in health trade publications. Te photo exhibition has since been replicated across the UK.
Tere was an exceptionally high level of both local and regional coverage of youth opportunities programmes as well as national coverage on the BBC News 24 Channel of the Rotary Young Citizen awards. Once again the showpiece final was broadcast live from the RIBI conference.
