Spring 2010 Cornish Gardener 25

Opening their doors for a great cause

THE Port Eliot Estate at St

Germans is open to the public on May 30

O

pen gardens events are becoming one of the major fundraisers

for charities up and down the country and this year St Luke’s Hospice in Plymouth is joining the ever-growing number by organising its own visits. Twenty gardens will be open on various days during the next few months in East Cornwall, Plymouth and West Devon.

Openings start on Sunday, April 18, at Bowringsleigh, West Alvington near Kingsbridge, which boasts ten acres of camellias, magnolias, rhododendrons and many other trees.

O

n Saturday, April 24, Weir Cottage at Bere Alston in Devon

opens, an arboretum with fascinating trees in a garden developed by Lady Harriet, wife of the third curator of Kew Garden. On Saturday, May 1, Fardel Manor at Cornwood opens its five acres of gardens, waterfalls and a lake surrounding the 13th Century house.

On Monday, May 3, Pentillie Castle and Estate at St Mellion near Saltash, in East Cornwall, will be open to the public from 11am to 4pm. The grounds have hardly changed since Sir Humphrey

PENTILLIE Castle and Estate will be open on May 3 with all proceeds going to St Luke’s Hospice

Repton drew the plans 200 years ago. His garden incorporated walks through the wooden valleys down to the Tamar.

This is a rare chance to see the garden as it is not open to the public very often.

F

urther into May and June Melville Tregaskis in Plymouth, with citrus

fruits and olives, is open, Plymouth Southway Drive Allotments will open up for a chance to see the hard work of its holders, Hazelwood House at Kingsbridge will put its ‘untamed’ garden on view and Sarah’s Garden at Modbury opens its gates for the chance

to see a delightful cottage garden. In Cornwall, the Port Eliot Estate at St Germans, another garden designed by Sir Humphrey Repton, opens on May 30. It’s a woodland garden with riverside walks and there’s a chance to explore the house and the historic church. It is open from 2-6pm.

O

ne of the biggest events is the Kingsbridge Garden

Walkabout which is organised by the town’s community garden and is on June 5 and 6. More than 20 gardens are open, large and small. A ticket to the event

allows entry to gardens on both days and there are plant sales and refreshments. Later in the year there are many other very different gardens open, including Hotel Endsleigh at Milton Abbot in Devon, Gnaton Hall, Yealmpton, Wildside Garden near Yelverton and a Gunnislake Walkabout.

T

he latter will see residents opening their gardens for the charity

during the Gunnislake Festival in early August.
