flower heads, many to one stem. Usually a house plant but does well in Cornwall against a south facing wall. Plant the bulbs in June, again quite deep, at least six inches. Colours are the pristine white or pink flushed ones. Don’t remove for winter, they hate disturbance. Staking may be necessary. Bletilla: An unusual plant known as the Chinese ground orchid and indeed its pretty

flowers in pinks, purple, white and yellow look just like orchids. Grow outdoors in mild areas but mulch in winter. Chlidanthus: Another lily, known as the Delicate Lily, which it will be in cold areas but in Cornwall can be grown out of doors in a south facing sunny spot but will need lifting in October. Big dark yellow and sweetly scented blossoms top a stout stem. Plant in April. Crinium: Big and bold, with pink or white flowers, this bulb likes a warm spot and should be planted in April or May. Hates to be moved so leave in-situ. Eucomis: Known as the pineapple lily because its flower head looks like a pineapple. It is a showy plant for sheltered
