CORNWALL SPRING FLOWER SHOW AT BOCONNOC FEATURE

A great way to banish those winter blues

G

ardeners are optimists by nature. In the depths of one of the coldest winters for many years the prospect

of the Cornwall Garden Society’s Spring Flower Show to be held on the Boconnoc Estate near Lostwithiel on Saturday and Sunday, April 10-11, is a cheering one. The show promises to be bigger and better than ever this year, with a number of changes and new features that should further enhance what is one of the highlights of the spring in Cornwall. As always, the heart of the show will be the exuberant display of the competitive classes, with the camellias, daffodils, rhododendrons and ornamental shrubs

and trees guaranteeing a brilliantly colourful spectacle of the highest quality. Show Director Debbie Evans reports encouragingly: ‘All the spaces available for the trade stands, which add so much to the content of the show, are fully booked, which would suggest the public enthusiasm for gardening continues to weather the recession.’

S

he is also happy to announce a major new feature which will be provided by a number of show gardens to be staged by several of the county’s best known gardens open to the public.

‘Each display will aim to encapsulate the horticultural character of the parent garden. Early response to this extra competitive class holds the prospect of a striking addition to the show. We are immensely grateful to Truro-based estate agents Lillicrap Chilcott for generously sponsoring this class, which proffers significant prize money and a new trophy. Another development which will add value for visitors will be the use of Boconnoc House for various events and the setting for the Botanical Art and Photographic exhibitions. These will greatly benefit from the extra space and elegant setting of the recently restored mansion.’
