A witty and at times provocative overview of the history of the Nobel Prize in Literature, from its beginnings in 1901 through to the present day. David Carter looks at the way it was initially inaugurated, Nobel’s original intentions, how they have been interpreted over the years, the make-up of the committee and the decision-making process. Carter covers the major controversies and rejections, those writers excluded from the award, and the politics behind the selection process, along with those who have famously refused to accept the award. He examines anomalies (only eleven women, for example), the great inclusions and some of the now neglected or forgotten former winners. Carter also provides a comprehensive checklist of all the Nobel Prize in Literature Winners to date with a brief synopsis of each writer, their work and the reasons for the award and finally he offers advice (in a none-too-serious vein) for would-be Nobel Prize in Literature laureates: highlighting the qualities that have proved necessary to win the prize – and how not be forgotten.
Dr. David Carter has taught at several universities both in the UK and overseas. He has published on psychoanalysis, literature, drama, film history and applied linguistics, and is also a freelance writer and journalist. He has more than 30 years experience with amateur drama, as actor, director and for many years as chairman of a leading group in the South of England. He has written Pocket Essentials
on Georges Simenon and Literary Theory, Creative Essentials on Plays and how to Produce them and Kamera Books on East Asian Cinema and The Western.
