Mariners improved their rotation in a big way by acquiring Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee, and the pesky Oakland Athletics always compete, but Ryan believes the Rangers offer something the other division teams don’t “balance.”

42 APRIL 2010

n the past, the Rangers have relied on offense, offense and more offense to win games, but the pitching has caught up to the run production. Led by Josh Hamilton, Ian Kinsler and

Michael Young, Texas’ offense still has to be considered one of the more feared in the American League. Add a healthy Nelson Cruz, a true leadoff hitter in Julio Borbon, and any consistency out of the catcher position between Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Taylor Teagarden and scoring runs shouldn’t be a

problem. However, the wrench in the gears could be health as both Hamilton and Kinsler have been hampered this spring with injuries, something that will be closely monitored early this season. Pitching talent isn’t an issue on this squad, but there are some questions. Harden is the new ace while Scott Feldman will look to follow up on his 17-win season a year ago. Colby Lewis makes his return to Arlington after an impressive showing in Japan the past two seasons. Other young arms vying for a spot in the rotation include Tommy Hunter, Derek Holland, Matt Harrison, Brandon McCarthy and CJ Wilson. Neftali Feliz and Frankie Francisco will battle for the closers role to lead an improved bullpen. While the Rangers do appear to be more balanced, do they have enough to knock the Angels off the pedestal and reach Ryan’s prediction of 92 wins? Only time will tell.
