Troop 21 Helps Nashua Soup Kitchen

submitted by Ben Dibble

It was another day that the boys wanted to sleep in, but duty called.

Twelve Scouts from Troop 21 rubbed the sleep out of their eyes early on Saturday the 13th, and headed over to Nashua. It was time for them to “do a good turn.” Every Saturday at the NSK, as the Nashua Soup Kitchen is known, they receive many boxes of perishable fruits and vegetables from local supermarkets. The boys were instructed in safe food handling, put on the plastic gloves, and got to work. They sorted about 15 large banana boxes of food as quickly as they could because the clients would be arriving soon. They also created boxes of food for one week for four- or five to six-member families. They finished around 60 boxes in the time they spent at the NSK. This was a service project for the Troop Chaplain’s Aide, David V.

For his leadership credit, he chose this project to help others. Arlene Campbell, the Troop Chaplain, is David’s advisor, and she helped him to organize the activity. “David is doing a wonderful job,” said Arlene, “we all have so much to learn. We are also planning to help at the American Cancer Association Relay for Life this June, as we have for the past four years.” The boys thought there was a lot of food at the NSK until the staff told them that the food would be gone that day. Also, they were told that the boxes of food for the needy would only last one week. The boys had a review of the events of the day, and were asked if they had ever gone hungry for a full day. Greg G. said he’d never gone without eating for more than an hour. He was joking, but it brought to mind that the boys were very fortunate, and that it takes very little to find yourself in a position of not knowing where your next meal will come from. The NSK and other food pantries need your help more than ever during these job-poor times. You can help by donating at your supermarket, by dropping off at your local pantry, or by bringing non- perishable food to the Scout meetings on Thursday nights from 7-8 p.m. at the Wattannick Grange Hall at the corner of Route 111 and Greeley Street.

Dunkin’ Donuts Parking Spaces ‘Too Narrow’

by Barbara O’Brien

The parking lot outside of the new Dunkin’ Donuts, located on Route 111 in Windham, does not meet the site plan approved by members of the Planning Board last year. Windham Selectman Ross McLeod originally raised the issue a few weeks ago, saying that the parking spaces in front of the building are “too narrow.” McLeod said that it’s obvious that the spaces are narrower than required when one parks there, leaving little room between the vehicles. Following McLeod’s comments, Economic and Community Planning Director Laura Scott checked the parking area. Scott has worked for the Town of Windham for approximately one year, replacing former planning director Alfred Turner. During the March 29 selectmen’s meeting, Scott admitted that she had signed off on the site plan prior to the opening of Dunkin’ Donuts this past November. “I can’t guarantee that I checked the width and length of the parking spaces, but I did count the spaces,” Scott said. She also said that she doesn’t have any knowledge that the occupant (Dunkin’ Donuts) changed the area after she signed off on the site plan.

After speaking with the proprietor of Dunkin’ Donuts this

past February, Scott reported that the occupant had agreed to re-stripe the parking spaces in front of the building, but needs to wait for better weather before taking on the task. Since that time, however, the occupant has requested a reconfiguration of the entire parking lot, an issue that will need to be taken into consideration by the Planning Board. Scott said that a hearing on that issue would most likely not take place until late April. After further discussion, selectmen decided to give the owner of Dunkin’ Donuts until May 15 to either re- stripe the parking spaces so that they are in compliance with the existing site plan, or to have received permission from the Planning Board to reconfigure the parking lot.

NH Again Named Safest State in the Nation; Earns Distinction for Third Year in a Row

submitted by Colin Manning

CQ Press has named New Hampshire the “Safest State” in the nation for 2010. This is the third year in a row that New Hampshire has earned the distinction as the safest state in the nation. “I am proud that working together, we continue to keep New Hampshire the safest state in the nation. Our low crime rate has long been a part of what makes this such a great place to live and work, and it is important that we work to maintain our high quality of life,” Governor Lynch said. “Again, this recognition is not possible without the hard work and dedication of the men and women of New Hampshire law enforcement who work every day to help keep us all safe.” The Crime State Rankings are published annually by Washington, DC-based CQ Press, the reference and textbook- publishing division of

Congressional Quarterly.

police, and increased the number of state prosecutors. “We must continue to work together to keep New Hampshire the Safest State in the nation,” Governor Lynch said.
