Learning in

Litchfield

by Elaine F. Cutler, Ed.D., Superintendent of Schools

When

we turn the calendar to April, it is

time to set the graduation date for our deserving seniors. This year,

graduation will be held on June 11 at Campbell High School. This is a ceremony during which we acknowledge the achievement of our students and the support of the community in helping our children prepare for experiences at a four-year college, community college, the workforce, or the armed services. Please mark your calendar for this memorable event. With only two days of school missed this year due to inclement weather, the last day of school for students in grades K-11 is June 18, barring any unforeseen circumstances. Spring Break this year will soon be here on April 26-30. For next year’s student calendar, please visit the school district’s Website at www.litchfieldsd.org. The District is carefully watching the NH State Legislature this session as our representatives grapple with funding education. Barring any further legislative action, the Litchfield School District is scheduled to lose $2 million out of the $6 million received from the state for the 2011-

2012 school year. Because we begin to build the budget in July for 2011, this is a critical time for the school district. We are very cognizant that the taxpayer cannot absorb this significant increase. The certainty of state funding will be finalized by the end of the legislative session in June. It would be beneficial for voters to contact your local state representatives to voice concerns about this scheduled reduction. Many efforts have been made by local state representatives to delay and/or revisit the implementation of this funding formula. Many parents are concerned about the closing of the playground at Griffin Memorial School. The equipment is more than 20 years old and is in need of repair or replacement. The District is working with our insurance company, as well as vendors to determine the safest and most cost-effective plan. The swings are safe and may be used. The playground may become a community-wide project. As a plan is finalized, information will be shared with the public. I would like to take this opportunity to thank

the voters of Litchfield for the passage of the Operating Budget and the Litchfield teacher’s contract during the March School District Meeting. It is a true reflection of respect and appreciation for our professional educators. I know that your vote of confidence and support was greatly appreciated. The Litchfield School Board takes great pride in

our schools and welcomes your comments and suggestions. You may contact any Board member or professional staff member using the directory available at www.litchfieldsd.org.
