Google’s Android operating system is gaining serious momentum. It may lack the definitive user experience of Apple’s iPhone OS but its supporters argue that the flexibility and customisability that make such a definitive experience impossible on Android are its most important strengths.

Traditional carrier revenues are declining and flat rate billing models introduced relatively recently to stimulate data uptake are proving to be unworkable. MCI talks to a range of billing specialists about the different strategies operators can employ to create new revenue streams.
A deal between Indian carrier Bharti Airtel and MEA player Zain has finally been reached that will see Zain’s African portfolio transferred to Zain. Over in Europe, meanwhile, the UK merger of T-Mobile and Orange has been given the go-ahead by the competition authorities. Handset vendor Nokia’s latest purchase is mobile browser firm Novarra, while Android fans are set to benefit from the conversion of a range of Java apps to run on the up and coming OS. It’s the end of the road for Vodafone’s navigation unit Wayfinder as well as voice to text player Spinvox’s consumer offering. Cisco has pulled the plug on its WiMAX base station operation, while Amdocs has bought mobile payment provider MX Telecom.
