MANILA, April 1, 2010 (AFP) – Philip- pine leader Gloria Arroyo’s ruling coalition appeared to be in disarray Thursday with just over a month before national elections to choose a new president. Arroyo’s chosen presidential candidate,

***

Gilberto Teodoro, this week resigned as chairman of her Lakas Kampi CMD co- alition, while many other senior leaders defected to other parties. “Gilbert Teodoro’s resignation is a shock to me and (came) without any consultation from us...the local troops are now confused over this event,” said House Speaker and top coalition member Prospero Nograles.

Nograles said in a statement sent to

AFP on Thursday that even he, a former vice chairman of the party, did not know in advance of Teodoro’s resignation. “I am now confused and seem to be out of the loop,” he said. Teodoro announced on Tuesday that he had resigned as chairman of Lakas Kampi CMD. His running mate, Edu Manzano, resigned as vice chairman. Teodoro’s resignation came after sev-

eral top Lakas Kampi CMD members defected to support the candidacy of a main rival, Senator Manny Villar, candidate of the Nacionalista Party.

The defection of key party members

to Villar’s camp has fanned speculation that Arroyo and her allies have abandoned Teodoro.

Claims that Teodoro quit to protest at a

lack of support from Arroyo dominated the Philippine media on Thursday. However, Teodoro’s office said in a statement he resigned as chairman to have more time to devote to his presidential campaign. Villar has also consistently de- nied any links to Arroyo, whose popularity ratings are so low that her endorsement is seen as costing a candidate votes. The Nacionalista Party meanwhile denied reports that Arroyo and her family were working out a deal to covertly support Villar for the presidency.

“There is no such deal in the works. We have nothing to do with the... first family. We have not sought their support nor asked for any favor regarding this election,” a party statement said.

Three governors in the southern Phil- ippines, including a provincial coalition chairman, announced in recent days they were switching their support to Villar. Former governor Luis “Chavit” Sing- son – a key Arroyo ally and political king- pin in the northern Philippines – also said he was switching from Teodoro to Villar. The Nacionalista Party explained these defections, saying “local officials are now scrambling to try to side with the perceived winner of these elections.” Surveys have shown that Teodoro lags a distant fourth in the race for the presidency. Villar is second, just behind Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino, the son of recently deceased democracy heroine Corazon Aquino. ■

from Miss Universe contest

MANILA, March 31, 2010 (AFP) – The Philippines’ entry for the Miss Universe beauty pageant has been disqualified after local organizers discovered she was born overseas and out of wedlock, a contest official said Wednesday. Maria Venus Raj, 21, was set to represent her country in August and begin charity work after winning the Miss Philippines-Universe competition early this month. But the journalism graduate was stripped of her title on Monday after the foun- dation that runs the local competition discovered she had been born in Qatar to an Indian man who was not married to her Filipina mother.

Her birth certificate stated she was born in the Philippines to married Filipinos. “We found out about the inconsistencies after the coronation night,” Lilia Ambay, of Miss Philippines-Universe Charity Incorporated, told AFP. She was stripped of her position not due to citizenship issues but because her birth certificate contained false information, Ambay said. A runner-up will replace Raj in the Miss Universe contest, Ambay added. Miss Philippines is a highly prestigious title and winners often go on to lucrative modelling or showbiz careers. ■ Page 1  |  Page 2  |  Page 3  |  Page 4  |  Page 5  |  Page 6  |  Page 7  |  Page 8  |  Page 9  |  Page 10  |  Page 11  |  Page 12  |  Page 13  |  Page 14  |  Page 15  |  Page 16  |  Page 17  |  Page 18  |  Page 19  |  Page 20  |  Page 21  |  Page 22  |  Page 23  |  Page 24  |  Page 25  |  Page 26  |  Page 27  |  Page 28  |  Page 29  |  Page 30  |  Page 31  |  Page 32  |  Page 33  |  Page 34  |  Page 35  |  Page 36  |  Page 37  |  Page 38  |  Page 39  |  Page 40  |  Page 41  |  Page 42  |  Page 43  |  Page 44  |  Page 45  |  Page 46  |  Page 47  |  Page 48  |  Page 49  |  Page 50  |  Page 51  |  Page 52  |  Page 53  |  Page 54  |  Page 55  |  Page 56  |  Page 57  |  Page 58  |  Page 59  |  Page 60  |  Page 61  |  Page 62  |  Page 63  |  Page 64  |  Page 65  |  Page 66  |  Page 67  |  Page 68
