Deadlines loom for 3 scholarships

April 7 is the deadline for seniors from Desert Ridge, Gilbert, Highland and Mesquite high schools to submit applications for Gilbert Education Foundation scholarships of $1,000 each.

The scholarships will be awarded to qualifying seniors planning to further their education by attending community college, a four-year university or an accredited technical school. Seniors graduating from Gilbert Public Schools with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and intending to major in elementary or secondary education are eligible to apply. GPS employees or the dependents of current GPS employees are also eligible to apply.

APW Scholarship

High school student journalists have until April 11 to apply for a $1,000 scholarship to be awarded by Arizona Press Women, a statewide organization of women and men who work as editors, writers, photographers, teachers and public relations specialists.

CSC Scholarship

SanTan Sun area residents have until April 15 to apply for Chandler Service Club’s Community Scholarships, established in 1979 to provide financial support to deserving students who are residents of the East Valley.

Applications for the Chandler Community Scholarships may include new, continuing, or reentry college students who reside in the greater Chandler community and who will be attending an advanced educational institution within the state of Arizona. Current year

Since its inception, the program has provided more than 350 scholarships totaling more than $240,000.00 to individuals pursuing a college education.

Youth Chronicles

Ben LeRoy of Aspire Jr. Sun Devils became the Level 6 Age 10-11 Arizona State All-Around Champion. He also placed second on parallel bars and became the Arizona State Floor, Pommel Horse and High Bar champion. Ben next goes to the regional meet on April 18 in San Diego to compete as an Arizona All-Star. The Aspire Jr. Sun Devils Level 6 Team also won first place at the State Championships. Aspire Kids Sports Center is located at 50 S. Heartstone Way in Chandler.

Kyle Eddy, Lena Nguyen and Erica Reyes, seniors at

Seton Catholic Preparatory School in Chandler, were named National Merit Scholarship Program Finalists. Eddy, son of Steven and Lisa Eddy of Chandler, is captain of the Varsity Baseball team and involved in National Honor Society, Peer Training and Drama Club and plans to major in pre-med at University of Arizona. Nguyen, daughter of Dungchi and Kim Nguyen of Gilbert, is an AP Scholar and plans to pursue a professional writing career and a college education at Yale or Princeton. Reyes, daughter of Alberto and Nora Reyes of Tempe, is a member of the Spanish Honor Society, National Honor Society, swim and dive teams, Peer Training and Multicultural Club and is a Seton Sentinel Ambassador. She plans to major in liberal arts at Arizona State University.

School; Pimwadee Limsirichai and Erica Schwencer of Chandler, Chandler High School; Stanley Gill Jr, Margretta Murphy and Shelby Newton of Gilbert, Mesquite High

School; Samuel Young, Gilbert, Gilbert High School; and Cael Muggeridge of Phoenix, who attends Horizon Honors High School in Ahwatukee recently returned from the first “2010 Honeywell Leadership Challenge Academy” (HLCA) at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, after receiving scholarships to attend. They were among 160 students from 20 countries and 28 states at the program, designed to build leadership skills and inspire the next generation of students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math. Interactive activities and workshops included simulating jet-fighter pilot training; scenario-based space missions; designing, building and testing their own rockets; meeting with top scientists, engineers, and former astronauts to reinforce core leadership competencies and provide them with first-hand accounts of professional experiences.
