CUSD art fair showcases youths’ works
View 2,250 pieces of artwork created by sixth-grade students throughout the Chandler Unified School District during the 8th Annual CUSD Art Masterpiece 6th Grade Art Fair held at Chandler Public Library’s Downtown, Basha and Hamilton branches April 5 through May 23.
Art Masterpiece is an all-volunteer, national art enrichment program that sends volunteer art guides into classrooms to teach the students about art. Using a print or reproduction of a famous art masterpiece as the basis of their lesson, volunteers give a brief discussion about the artist and their particular style of art. The students then create a hands-on art project that reinforces what they learned. For more information about the CUSD Art Masterpiece program, visit ww2. chandler.k12.az.us; select “Community Education” and then “Art Masterpiece.”
BHS hires new football coach
The former Mountain View High School coach will lead the Basha High Bears football team this year.
Bernie Busken was hired as head football coach by a BHS committee of parents, coaches and staff. They reviewed 17 candidates, interviewed 11 and recommended Busken to the Chandler Unified School District Governing Board, which approved the hiring at its recent meeting.
Busken, currently head coach at Western New Mexico University, returns to the East Valley where he experienced “tremendous success” leading the Mountain View program. Busken compiled one of the top winning percentages in Arizona history, 82-9, while leading the Toros to three 5A state championships. “With Coach Busken, it’s more than about football and it’s more than about winning,” says Basha High Principal Ken James. “He has a reputation for developing the character of the young men he coaches.
“I talked to parents of former players who shared information about Coach Busken’s home visit to the families of high school players in the program,” James adds. “They told us that the coach would relate that he can’t guarantee what is going to happen, and can’t promise playing time, but he does promise the youngster will become a better student, better man and better son after playing with him.”
James can be reached at 480-224-2107. Art Fair Schedule:
