Saving trees along Arizona Avenue work site

Salvaging existing trees in the sidewalks along Arizona Avenue is one of the tasks for the work crew during the current construction to widen sidewalks, add bike lanes and narrow the roadway from Frye Road to Chandler Boulevard. According to spokesperson Teresa Makinen, arborists recently evaluated the trees from Frye to Chandler to determine their condition and the ability to move any trees to other sites in Chandler, such as local parks.

around the tree must be excavated and a wood box built in the soil around the tree,” Makinen explains. “In some instances, the existing tree well is very small, so this may require removal of a sidewalk panel or curbing to accommodate this process. The tree sits in the box in the soil for approximately three to four weeks to become conditioned to the box.” For safety reasons, she says there may be tape or a barricade around the excavated site, but pedestrian traffic will be accommodated. Once the tree is conditioned, the box with soil and tree is lifted out of the site and moved to a site the contractor has identified in the area, and there the tree will be regularly watered until it can be replanted elsewhere. Meanwhile, Makinen says crews are continuing “potholing” on Washington Street from Frye Road to Boston Street. A truck moves from site to site to dig a small hole, approximately 12 to 15 inches in diameter. Then the crew backfills and paves back the excavated area. Makinen explains that the procedure

helps to gather information related to asphalt depths, soil conditions and underground utilities. Two-way traffic and parking will continue to be permitted on the street, but there may be instances where a specific pothole site may not be accessible due to a parked vehicle, and owners will be asked to remove the vehicles. Work will be daytime only, and the three-week project is expected to be completed in early April.

Crews are also working on storm drain laterals and electric duct

bank crossings on the west side of the median island between Boston and Buffalo for the next two to three weeks. Traffic control will continue on Arizona Avenue from south of Frye Road to just north of Chandler Boulevard to restrict traffic to one lane in each direction north and south between Frye and Chandler. However, traffic will be shifted to the east side of the median island between Boston and Buffalo in this configuration.

During construction, Makinen says Arizona Avenue will remain open and should always have at least one lane in each direction in the corridor, except for possible coordinated weekend work when necessary in the intersections at Boston, Buffalo or Frye. In addition, she says there should always be left-turn access into the historic square either from Buffalo or Boston streets.

Large crane leaving downtown

Its work is done.

The 150-foot crane towering over the new Chandler City Hall site in downtown Chandler has completed its job and is being dismantled and removed from the site.

Meanwhile, work continues on City Hall’s raised access flooring and the roofing for the five-story tower. In the City Council Chambers, interior and exterior framing and roofing is currently taking place. Utilities such as plumbing, electrical and HVAC are currently being installed in the Neighborhood Resources Building, on the southeast corner of Chicago Street and Arizona Avenue, and roofing for the structure is underway.

Steel is currently being installed for the Vision Gallery, which will sit on the northeast corner of Chicago Street and Arizona Avenue.

In the Communications and Public Affairs (CAPA) Print Building on the southwest corner of Chicago and Washington streets north of the parking garage, utilities including plumbing, electrical and HVAC are currently being installed, and roofing is underway. The CAPA Print Building sits on the southwest corner of the intersection and is north of the parking garage. Steel for the bridge between Elevator 4 and the parking garage continues. The parking garage structure is located on the south side of Chicago Street between Arizona Avenue and Washington Street.
