Although the summer intersession break from school may be a couple months away, now is the ideal time to investigate children’s summer camps. For some, registration has already begun.

Here is a list of summer camps designed to engage kids in enjoyable, physically and mentally stimulating programs.

Note: Preregistration is required for all camps. Some camps offer before and after camp child care; call to inquire.

AIT Sports Camps

Chandler and Gilbert locations

480-786-9454, www.AthletesInTraining.com. A variety of summer sports camps are offered by Athletes in Training, a sports club offering opportunities for boys and girls in grades K-six. Basketball, baseball, flag football, field hockey and soccer are offered, along with recreational games including Ketchup and Mustard, Capture the Flag, Jedi Dodgeball, Kickball and various water games. This six-week summer day camp, June 7-July 15, is for developmentally disabled school-age children and teens. Trained staff implement the program, which includes arts and crafts, individual and group games, music therapy, daily swimming, story time and more. Fee: $250-$313. Chandler Young Actors Group Musical Theatre Camp

Children ages 8 and older become part of the show through professional coaching from Kristen Drathman, a local actor, singer and concert performer. Learn all aspects of musical theatre including dancing, singing and acting in Broadway productions. Campers end the summer on stage with a live performance for family and friends. Two sessions are available. Camp 1 runs 9 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. June 7-25 for $435; Camp 2 takes place from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. July 6-15 and costs $295. Space is limited.

3-4 and Main Camp ages 5-12, including swimming, bowling and more. The camp runs from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday- Friday, June 28-July 23 and costs $150 per week, plus a $25 registration fee; $450 for all four weeks; $25 per day. Registration deadline is April 15.

Session I, Music Immersion Camp for ages 6-15, runs from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday- Friday July 12-16, with a performance on Friday at 1:30 p.m. Included are improvisation and composition, ensemble featuring scores of Prokofiev and Vaughan Williams, notation and finale (laptops recommended), storytelling with music, which includes programmatic music and beginning to write original stories to fit compositions of students. Interviews with students or conversations with private piano teachers are required to determine level placement: Beginning–Level 3 of piano study, Intermediate–Level 5 of piano study or Advanced–Level 8 of piano study with previous composition experience. The fee for Session I is $300 for the week; $150 for Improvisation & composition time only (subject to student’s level).

Session II, Singing and Acting Performance for ages 6-15, is from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. July 12-16 and July 19-21 with a 1 p.m. performance on July 21. Includes music scenes from “Sound of Music” and “Mary Poppins” and auditions for solo roles the first day. Emphasis is on voice techniques, movement and solid performance skills in a fun, energized setting. Fee: $300, includes registration and materials.

JCC Summer Camps

Three three-week sessions are available starting June 1, along with pre- and

post-camp options starting May 24 and ending Aug. 4. Camps offered include Camp K’Tonton for preschoolers, Camp Shalom for kindergarteners, Camp Sayarim for first- and second-graders, Camp Tayalim for third-, fourth- and fifth- graders, and Camp Tza’ear, a traveling camp for sixth- through ninth-graders. A leadership training program for entering ninth- and tenth-graders is also offered. All JCC camps feature a child-centered, age-appropriate program with the goal of helping each camper develop new skills and instilling a greater appreciation of his or her capabilities while increasing his or her Jewish identity. All campers have time to explore swimming, sports, music, Israeli culture, drama and arts and crafts, as well as new rotations. Call for fees.
