Beauty school students give back

Thanks to the Studio Academy of Beauty in Chandler and its students, women from Chicanos Por La Causa, Inc., a women’s empowerment group, will travel from Globe for “a day of self-esteem.”

“This is a great experience for our students,” says Cathy Koluch, president of the Studio Academy of Beauty. “It teaches them social awareness and how they can give back to the community they are from whenever they can.” The Studio Academy of Beauty is located at 610 N. Alma School Rd. For more information call 480-857-1138 or visit www.tsaob.com.

Dry eyes affect Arizona women

Arizona residents often suffer from burning, irritable eyes or the sensation that something is actually scratching the eye. But for around 3 million women in the U.S., the symptoms of dry eye syndrome are chronic, says optometric specialist Christopher Heetland, who owns and practices at Insight Eyecare & Eyewear in Chandler’s Fulton Ranch Promenade.

“Tears are essential for good eye health,” Heetland explains. “They lubricate the eye, protect it from infections and wash away allergens. With dry eye syndrome, the eyes produce too few tears or tears of such poor quality that they don’t stay on the eye. Ironically, some people with dry eye syndrome may actually experience tears running down their cheeks.”

Everyone experiences reduced tear production as they age, but women are more prone to dry eye syndrome than men by a three-to-one margin, says Heetland, adding that studies have shown that hormone therapy, birth control pills, blood pressure medicines, antihistamines and certain anti-depressants may increase the incidence of the disorder.

Options for managing dry eye syndrome include high-quality lubricating drops, prescription eye drops and even nutrition.

“Certain nutritional supplements can be incredibly beneficial for some forms of dry eye conditions,” says Heetland, “and through a procedure called lacrimal occlusion, we can also temporarily or permanently close the tear ducts to prevent tears from draining away too quickly.”

Volkswagen coming to Gilbert

SanTan Volkswagen, scheduled to open in Gilbert in early 2011, will be Arizona’s largest Volkswagen dealership and expects to gross more than $40 million in sales annually.
