TRC marks 2 years with health fair

Vendors from local businesses in the sports, health, wellness, fitness and nutrition industries offer information to the public at Tumbleweed Recreation Center’s free Health & Wellness Fair held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wed. April 21 to commemorate the center’s second anniversary.

Special Olympics at Tumbleweed Park

Area residents are invited to participate in the Arizona Fun Run for Special Olympics, taking place from 7 to 11 a.m. Sat., April 24 at Tumbleweed Park in Chandler.

The event is scheduled to begin promptly at 7 a.m. with the 4.2-K, or 2.6-mile run, followed by the 2.1-K, or 1.3-mile run, at 8:30 a.m.

Special Olympics athletes participate in the run and will be on hand to meet and greet. Merchandise is available for sale, and donations are accepted. The cost for adult participation is $10; children younger than 12 years are $5. Tumbleweed Park is located at 2250 S. McQueen Rd. in Chandler. Laurie Fagen, publisher of SanTan Sun News, was selected to receive the 2010 Ruby Award by Soroptimist International of the San Tans, honoring the first federation president Ruby Lee Minar. The Soroptimist Ruby Award honors women who have worked to improve the lives of women and girls through their professional and/or volunteer work. Fagen was selected for “your tireless efforts in promoting the best in women and for serving as a role model to young women in our community. Your work in professional broadcasting, public administration, teaching and business are outstanding examples of a very talented woman utilizing her skills in diverse ways. Additionally, you have never hesitated to give back and it is through your efforts that we are a better community.” She will be recognized at the upcoming Spring Awards Luncheon, at noon Thu., April 29 in the San Marcos Golf Resort and Conference Center San Tan Ballroom, 1 N. San Marcos Place in Chandler. A donation of $350 in Fagen’s name will be given to the Soroptimist International of the Americas Disaster Relief Fund to help women and girls in Haiti. Fagen is also a top ten finalist in the Mompreneur of the Year award, with voting by the public currently underway at www.mompreneuroftheyear.com/LaurieFagen.asp.

Kristen Shaver of Chandler was hired by Valley-based Christian Business Networking to provide leadership and support to CBN’s 15 Arizona chapters as well as to assist in the development of new chapters. CBN was founded by Maia Arneson in 2003 as a way for Christian business owners to connect for fellowship and pass business leads at weekly chapter networking meetings, and has seen 50 percent growth in 2009.
