NEWS FROM TAVISTOCK

PEACE ACTION GROUP

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 6th April at 7-30pm in the Friends’ Meeting House, Bedford Car Park, Tavistock. We welcome all who would like to join us.

We have continued to publicise the MOD proposal to cut up redundant nuclear submarines at Devonport Dockyard. We think this issue should be raised with candidates during the General Election campaign. More information can be found at www.submarinedismantling.co.uk

In April we intend to show a film about the plight of the Chagos Islanders, who have been forbidden to return to their homes since the construction of the US military base on Diego Garcia. A UK court has ruled that they can return to the islands, which are a British Overseas Territory, but they are still unable to do so.

For more information about TPAG please phone 01822 615960.

Officially part of the British Indian Ocean Territory, the Chagos were home to the Chagossians for more than a century and a half until the United Kingdom and the United States expelled them in the 1960s in order to allow the US to build a military base on Diego Garcia, the largest of the Chagos Islands. The deal was sanctioned by the then British Secretary of State for Defence, Denis Healey.

ART @ DELAMORE 2010

Delamore Estate in Cornwood, on the southern fringes of

Dartmoor, will be open to the public from 10.30am - 4.30pm every day in May as part of

Art @ Delamore 2010.

Featuring all sorts of quirky pieces from over 100 established local, national, and international painters and sculptors, such as a life-sized mosaic camel by Carolyn King, and Gordon Dickinson’s steel eagle with a wing span of seven foot, the eighth annual charity exhibition has something for everyone.

exhibition yet with several new projects, including a space that will serve soup, salad, sandwiches, cakes and ice-creams. Also, Plymouth’s Creative Arts Facility “Flameworks” will be launching their very own sculpture trail around Delamore’s idyllic trout lake. A landmark of traditional Dartmoor architecture, the Estate was commissioned by Admiral Parker (one of Nelson’s captains at Trafalgar) as a wedding gift in 1859.

A fantastic family day out, there is also the opportunity to explore the largest Cromlech in the world, where visitors can walk the 200 meters (one meter for each decade) up to the Tomb
