A Marathon Task!
GAIL Downham from Tavistock has always dreamed of running a marathon and to her amazement and delight has been offered a place to run in this year’s Virgin London Marathon on 25th April.
Born in Plymouth, Gail moved to Tavistock in 1970 before living in Mary Tavy for 10 years. At the age of 18 she moved to London returning to Tavistock in 1997 to be closer to her family where she lives with her two daughters, Jessica 16 and Sapphira 11.
Gail, who is a Sales Executive/Show Manager at
Trident Exhibitions of West Devon Business Park in Tavistock, says, “Having reached the age of 49 (the big 50 on 2nd October 2010!) I decided that if ever there was a time to realise my ambition of running a Marathon then this was going to be the year. Although this is going to be a huge personal achievement, it is not just about my ambition and personal satisfaction; this is about the charity that I am running for: CLIC Sargent (Caring for Children with Cancer). My pledge is to raise at least £1500+ and just as important is to raise awareness for this Charity. CLIC Sargent provides comfort and support to those children who are suffering from Cancer and Leukaemia and their families, always striving to improve the quality of their lives.
I believe we are a generous nation and I believe that we all want to give something back and no matter how insignificant we may think it is, the impact of everyone coming together to help fundraise for charities, national and international disasters surely gives us all a feel good factor and makes for a better world to be in.”
As well as training for her run, Gail has also been busy arranging fundraising evenings to benefit the charity.
On Friday 26th March there will
be a Bingo Night at The Royal British Legion - Non monentary prizes, but prizes and Raffle. 8.00pm to 10.00pm. All proceeds to CLIC Sargent fundraising pot. Bingo Books sold on the night and Raffle Tickets. £3.00-£5.00 a book.
Kelly College, Main Building Malvern Hall will be the venue for a Fashion Show Ladies Evening Courtesy of Beau Boutique of Yelverton. Proprietor Fiona Williams will provide a Catwalk Show and Sale of Fashion to suit all occasions and Seiren Lingerie of Tavistock Proprietor, Kate, will provide a
On Wednesday 14th April at
Catwalk Show of Lingerie and Swimwear and there will also be a Bra Fitting Measuring Facility available as well as the opportunity to have your nails done, or face neck and shoulder massage for a minimal additional cost. Shot in the Dark Disco will be providing lighting and music.
The tickets will be on sale at both Beau and Seiren’s Shops at £10.00 to include complimentary wine and light beverages. Proceeds from the Ticket Sales and Raffle will go to the CLIC Sargent fundraising pot. All donations and monies raised on the night will be announced in the local press.
Says Gail, “I am looking forward to making these events enjoyable and successful and would like to thank Royal British Legion Tavistock,

Kelly College Enterprises Paul Birchell, Fiona from Beau Boutique, Kate at Seiren’s, Baz Lowton from Shot in the Dark Disco and everyone who is involved in helping to make these events successful in achieving my pledge sum to CLIC Sargent and making my run seem less daunting a task.”
I would also like to give a big thank you to the Red & Black Club for their support and contribution on the 12th March knock out skittles night and to all who came and supported the fun evening which raised £155.00 pounds towards the CLIC Sargent Funds. Thanks to all."
