Recreation Department Fee Schedule Announced

by Doug Robinson

During the recent Hudson Board of Selectmen’s meeting, Hudson’s Recreation Director, Dave Yates, presented to the Board of Selectmen his recommendations for a fee schedule change. The new fees would take place April 1. “During the budget process, the Board of Selectmen suggested that I go back and review fees,” commented Yates. Yates, along with the Recreation Committee, reviewed all the fees for the town-sponsored programs. “The last time we increased the cost to a program was three years ago, and that was to the summer program. All the others [adult programs] have not been raised for five years,” he said. With the approval from the Board of Selectmen, fees received from the Summer Program, depending upon the numbers remaining the same, will “break even,” commented Selectman Shawn Jasper. According to Yates, Hudson’s summer programs are the “lowest in the area.”

Alvirne High School’s Class Act troupe shined at the NH Educational Theatre Guild’s State Drama Festival (March 26 and 27 in Gilford) with How May I Help You? after advancing from the Regional Festival in Merrimack three weeks ago. The original one-act, written and co-directed by 18-year-old AHS senior Scott Bernstein, brought to life the realistic world of The Poultry Palace, a fictitious, small fast-food restaurant—complete with wacky beak hats, tacky jingles, and a resident chicken touting the “best legs in town.” Along with lots of laughs, fast action, and a terrific set, the true-to-life show depicted some poignant vignettes of camaraderie, loyalty, and compassion. The vibrant cast of distinct characters included the Poultry Palace’s order taker and insightful narrator, Scott (Jon Adams), a bevy of ne’er-do-well fellow teen employees (including Brad Fernald, Stephen Huang, James Gillum, Nicole Olson, and Andrew Pinto), the “she-devil” boss (Stephanie Langlais), and a range of interesting customers, from the $1.79 French-fry-obsessed girl (Kate Mosca) to a homeless Vietnam Vet (Jenna Vaclavik). As always, the diligent behind-the-scenes crew helped make the front-stage thespians look and sound great. Key crew included Shawna Holt (Co-Director), Cira Watson (Stage Manager), Alan Foster, Josh Carter, and Ryan Caron. Jen LaFrance, AHS English/Theatre teacher, was the show’s primary advisor, while Lizette Estrada and David LaFrance headed costumes and sets, respectively. Beyond the three significant rounds of ensemble-wide successes How May I Help You? garnered – at Alvirne’s Night of One-Acts and NHETG’s Regional and State Festivals – were also some very personal

AHS Class Act’s “Boss Kelly” (Stephanie Langlais) directs her Poultry Palace employees (Brad Fernald, Steven Huang, Andrew Pinto, and Jon Adams) in a rousing jingle in their show at the NH State Drama Festival

triumphs. Reflecting on the State Festival, playwright Bernstein beamed, “This [play] went so much further than I ever imagined,” which, in part, was inspired by the people and experiences of his first job in a local take-out restaurant. A long- time Class Act actor, Scott won NHETG’s prestigious “Excellence in Writing” with his impressive debut script. He explained, “Writing is what I really want to do with my life; this was my first stepping stone.” A fun twist to the play was that Scott’s persona was portrayed by his real-life best friend—AHS senior Jon Adams. Collaborating with a good friend had its “pluses and minuses,” and occasionally became “pretty intense,” Adams candidly admitted, but it was also “a blast” and produced some astonishing results. The State NHETG adjudicators praised Jon’s “natural touch with the audience” and “razor-sharp comic sense,” which earned him NHETG’s coveted “Excellence in Acting” at both the regional and state levels.

especially exciting about bringing this show through regionals and states as it was entirely new and original,” another Class Act senior enthused. “It was something everyone could relate to and best of all, it was well-written by one of our very own.” “I’m so very proud of these young men and the entire cast and crew of How May I Help You?” expressed Jen LaFrance, Class Act’s Advisor, genuinely. “Class Act has had an extraordinary year with more to come, thanks to so many,” she added, giving praise to the troupe’s Assistant Advisors (Lauren Denis and Suzanne Callis) and the indefatigable support of OnStage (Class Act’s parent volunteers) and the Hudson community. Alvirne’s Class Act continues its year with its International Thespian Honor Society Inductions (April 22), Electronics Recycling and Car Wash at AHS (April 24), and their spring main stage, Almost, Maine (May 21 and 22). Last, but not least, the cast/crew for Wiley and the Hairy Man, and 11 students with “Superior” ratings, have qualified to go to the Educational Theatre Association’s Nationals in Nebraska (June 21-27).
